Matt, What are your breeding goals with the 869. A good color cross, or a cross mostly for size/weight? Also, if you list some of the seeds you have, in the category you're after, it would be helpful. Of course if I had the 869, I'd breed another good color producer into it(that's my personal preferrence).

The obvious choice is to self it. I'd cross it with something with orange genes to hopefully produce orange pumpkins.

Matt My first choice is the 810 Dill, and surprising enough, I haven't seen that it has been done. 940 Mombert 00 would also be a good choice.Tom Beachy's 808, or 237 The 808 is the same cross as the 869 and the 237 is an 846 Calai Remake. Or Like Brian said anything with a lot of orange in it Eddy

Matt, I know you are looking at "big name" seeds for your cross, but you have my 1046.6 which has 1016 all over the lineage. Big and orange throughout the last 3 generations, might look at that one.

869 calai x 798 calai. The 798 is the reverse of the 869.

That one sounds interesting...has anything like that been done before? I also like the 810 Dill cross. Heck, I would love to get the 810 Dill if someone has one available.

The 505 Dill 05 is an 810 x 869, the reverse cross of what Eddy suggested.

George,I was one of the lucky 15 to get your 680(1370 x 869) seed and I wish I had been sharper with the germination.

Matt, why not use something like the 1253 Sperry. It produces fairly orange from what I saw. If you cross a dark orange with a orange, you should still maintain a medium to dark orange. Look at the 897 Davies...that produces a very nice orange. I never would have exected that with the 845 and 1260 in there.

I'd self it and use it to pollinate a 845x723 or 723x845 cross, such as the 1097.5 Beachy or the 1367.5 Rose. Or if you have a 805 or 898 that would be great too. But the others are much easier to come by. Then grow your two crosses the following season and cross them with each other.
2007: 869.5 x 869.5 1097.5 x 869.5
2008: 869x869 X 1097x869 1097x869 X self
2009: (1097x869 X 1097x869) X (869x869 X 1097x869)
If you like big and orange.

Matt, knowing you will need to use dynamite to dig your pit and spend loads of cash to bring down the ph in your alkaline clay soil, I’ve just the cross for you. CROSS the SD/MN border and give that fantastic 869 to your old friend and buddy. lol Matt wishing you the best out there in the banana belt of the Midwest.
