Can someone please clue me in on crossing similar genetics? (see also my post next to this one).

Seems like this is potentially a good idea... but my question is, "is it ALWAYS a good idea?" or can it be bad?

take for example the 1097 beachy (845 Bobier X 723 Bobier). The 723 Bobier and the 845 Bobier have the same genetic background as far as I can tell. Is the 1097 an awesome seed becuase these similar genetics were crossed? or is it awesome becuase the 723 and the 845 are just both great seeds?

Along those same lines, take the 1046 Rondeau 2006. (1068 Wallace X 1081 Leonzi). Once again, the 1068 and the 1081 have similar genetic backgrounds as far as I can tell... not to mention that their genetics (845 Bobier X 898 Knauss) are fantastic. This leads me to conclude that the 1046 Rondeau could be one great seed that I am quite excited about.

1. So am I crazy?
2. Have I been enjoying my AGGC membership too much?
3. Should we all be planting the 1046 Rondeau? I think I am.

any thoughts?

I think we all ought to be planting the 1068 Wallace,LOL.

The 1046 Rondeau was a well thought out cross and I think your right, it could be a fantastic seed that will see alot of dirt in 07'.
I also think the 1081 hasn't been grown enough and hasn't seen its full potential yet,the seed hasn't had a good chance from what I been seeing in a few states because of terrible , extremely wet weather.

One of my favorites,1097 Beachy you used as a example, this seed is gonna continue to grow some monsters and I dont beleive that this seed is that difficult to find yet, but do know Tom is running real low on this seed. I think this seed wasn't grown much this year because of all the great seed choices we now have, but we all know the 1097's seeds potential when it hits the dirt. Next year your gonna see the 1068 Wallace growing and leading pumpkins over 1000lbs with out a doubt(of course, lol) But if you have a 1097 Beachy Id plant it, causes chances are if your soil is good ,so are you chances of growing one over a 1000 with this seed.

If you cross a seed with one that has similar genetics, the chances of having the resulting seeds produce seeds which produce consistently SIMILAR offspring is greater than if you cross two seeds that do not have similar gentiecs.
