I'd like to know more about his seeds and pumpkins. Has anyone grown these seeds, or seen his pumpkins? Does he select mainly for color, or shape also? He's using 567.5 Mombert and 801.5 Stelts genetics, for those interested. His seeds are offered on in the upcoming PNW seed auction.

I planted one last year unfortunately, I snapped the main and never got another good vine going. I believe there is a lot of potential here for great shape and color.

I agree James. I wonder what seed grew that Salinas pumpkin?

Paul Rys' focus is beautiful orange (and shape).
Doug is correct, he is using mainly the 567.5 Mombert and 801.5 Stelts genetics. One of the seeds that he started his "orange beauty project" with is the 940 Mombert 2000 (567.5 x 801.5). I know this for a fact as the 940 that he stared with came from my seed box. Numerous growers across the nation donated some quality seeds to Paul's orange project....Kirk Mombert, Pete Glasier, Loren Vanderschoot and Greg Stucker (to name a few).

I do not know of a California grower named Jack Salinas....however, Jack Vezzolo (from Salinas) grew a beautful 584 lb. pumpkin in 2006 on a Paul Rys seed. It was weighed at Half Moon Bay.
I will post a photo of this pumpkin in the BP Photo Gallery tomorrow.
A word or warning......have a pair of sun glasses handy to put on, as it is so ornage, it will probably hurt your eyes to look at it.

That 584 Vezzolo is BEAUTIFUL! No methion of it at AGGC yet he does have another '06 fruit there? Is the genetics of the Paul Rys line being held secret?

Steve, I will send a photo of Rys' seed packets to the Photo Gallery so you can see how he labels his seed stock.
Personally I do not like the way he labels his seeds. As you will see, it does not give us the information that we would all like to have.

Thanks Geo. of Napa for giving the information on Jack's (AKA Jack Vezzolo of Salinas) pumpkin. It is a beautiful fruit and I am going to grow it myself this year. Paul warns that it can come out a squash, Jack had two squash on this plant before the pumpkin came through. We started three plants, one died, one grew a nice size squash and the last one grew this pumpkin. We were told the seed came from a 200 pound pumpkin and were not told the genetics, only that Paul wanted it self pollianted. It is no secret on our part. Lila Vezzolo
