Although not proven the 553 Simpson 06 (670 Daigle x self)
went 23% heavy.

My 641Andrews06 (670Daigle x 603.5Muller) was a deep shiney orange...not the red-orange, but an orange-orange,smooth shiney....it went 13.8% heavy to chart. It was pollinated by the 603Muller which has a history of producing fruit of exceptional beauty and Dill/golden globe winners. The 603 produced three exceptionally purdy fruit with darker orange with neat lighter orange stripes, very very shiney skin, and medium ribbing. I expect good things with this cross.
ps....I must not have gotten the memo....since when did the book's name change to "Pumpkins are Red".???

If my memory serves correctly both the 650 and 669 Muller were more than 10% heavy and some of the best looking fruit ever, both grown from the 603.5. Pap what's gotten into you lately?

my 640 mohr was orange/orange and 19% heavy. grown off the 904 northrup. I would like to give the 904 another try.

The 1041 Sherwood grew a beautiful dark red, round pumpkin that went about 1000 pounds in Jim's patch. It was as nice a pumpkin of that size I have ever seen in person. It was an 846 Calai x 810 Dill cross.

There's a guy up the road a piece from you pap that grew an 897.5,,,seems it produced some nice, orange, big and meets the at or above the chart fruit. Joe J already made the cross seems you might have one of those seeds in the arsenal already. Of course they tend to be more orange than red, I didn't get that memo either Glenn.

Dick,
The 955 Stelts may be one to consider. There are two progeny on the AGGC. One went over 9% heavy, and the other was about on chart. Ron R. grew one a few years back. All three were dark orange(maybe reddish-orange), in the pics I've seen. All were long with very shallow ribbing.

The 1233.5 Reiss gave us a beautiful round 644lb pumpkin in Santa Cruz sat fall. Easy plant and good steady grower. In a better climate I bet it would go even bigger. You can check it out on our diary page under "creekside."

The 1099 Clark is dark orange and gorgeous. My 812 Truong was very orange, 9.4% over the charts. But it was not as dark as Bill's. KathyT

I have to agree with Doug 14....the 955 Stelts...we selfed it, produces us our best for the year 804.5 '05, was long, dark redish orange, shallow ribs.

Dick, if you are looking for a proven orange producer, the 670 Daigle is one the better bets out there. Biggest problem with this seed is that if it is pushed too hard it grows fruit so fast they blow up. It also has a history of going heavy to the charts with the notable exception of the 1250 Kline which went way light.

The nicest orange fruit I've ever grown was MiMi the Magnificent, the 1034 Zunino. This was grown off the 997 Zunino which has similar genetics to the 670 Daigle. The 997 unfortunately had only a few seeds and has rarely been planted so there is little history for it...

802 Kurilich is a good one to watch
888 and 840 grown last year from it. Perfect shape, amazing color, and both were over 100 lb heavy for their size. If I remember corectly the 888 was grown on just over 200 sq ft plant. Could be a lot of potential hidden in this rarely mentioned seed.

Two of the darkest orange/red pumpkins that I have seen in person are the 731 Stucker '00 (801.5 x self) and the 654 Troy '01 (940 Mombert 00 x open - probably selfed by the bees). The 731 was 3% over chart, the 654 right on chart.
If I wanted to grow a beautiful "orange" pumpkin, I would grow either of these.....or any of the others listed in the above posts.

If I wanted to grow a beautiful "orange/red" pumpkin, I would plant the 940 Mombert 00

I am only doing a few plants this and they will be squash.
If I was going to plant orange the 1250.5 Kline would be my pick.
Yep pumpkineer, the "1250.5 is the one" ............Todd did a great cross on this one.

PAP,

I have some red orange crosses if you want some seeds let me know. 591.5 Van Hook 680 Crosby 05 = (1101 Speakman ((1370 Rose X 801.5 Stelts)) X 869.5 Calai 00) X (1048 Companion 03)=((810 Dill X 801.5 Stelts) also 483 Van Hook the second fruit on the 1036 Companion 03 = (801.5 Stelts X 810 Dill) X 1048 Companion 03 =(810 Dill X 801.5 Stelts) John Van Hook

If I remember correctly, the 1260 weir threw some nice orage pumpkins with over the charts credentials. The 897 davies would be an excellent choice as it is proven (1248 ford).

Yea, I say you already have that seed to grow this year Pap. the 1068 you crossed with the 1225. Or you can try any number of Kevin Compainion seeds, he has grown a bunch of pumpkins with a crisp orange color.

My 814 off the 501 beachy, turned almost red. That was an awesome pumpkin and I think it was 10% heavy off an old chart back in '04.

The 501 Beachy seems to have good size potential as well. Good thinking Kelly. Now if we can learn the cross of the 501(the secret recipe?).

I will vouch for the 802 Kurilich for exactly the reasons Nic mentioned. We were just kind of standing there with a calculator figuring out percent heavy and scratching our heads wondering how fruit with such good shape and color (840 and 888) were so heavy.

the 500northrup i grew last year was the most orange pumpkin i ever grew.shiney smooth skin also im not sure about heavy to the charts but at least one was grown over 1200 off that seed.

Why not cross the seed which grew top orange GPC pumpkin, 624 Manuel (500 Northrup) with it? However, 670 Daigle has to be right up there. Send me a 1068 and I'll do both. LOL Good Luck, Danny

I like this post, lots of good stuff.
Now my thoughts and pretty much out in left field. But, I would think, and I would probably do it, is cross the 1230 Daletas into the 1068, Why, well, the 1230 has been doing some excellent stuff as a pollinator, and if you look at the 670 Daigle, the awsome shape never came from the 810.
The 1230 sure was not over the charts, but as a pollinator it seems to throw heavy. And my second choice would be the 810 Dill, 2 lines very far removed, could also be good.
