The 1370 Rose is a 1260 Weir x 712 Kuhn cross that consistently produces beautiful orange, large, heavy pumpkins. I don't understand the orange part of it, because all of the other 712 Kuhn offspring are almost white, with the exception of the 1058 Houghton...which was half green. I'm a big believer in the 1260's ability to produce large, heavy offspring...but I just don't get what the 712 is bringing to the party? I have these seeds and could make this cross, but I'm not sure that a re-make would end up with 1370 type results. What are your thoughts?

Good question. First of all, the ability to produce large fruit, might be attributed to the mother, which was 1370 lbs., of course. The 712 Kuhn seems to be a good pollinator, as well. As for the color, I'm stumped.

Probably AG colour is under multigenic control (this explain the difficult to fix orange in the progeny of some orange pumpkins and some remake failure); moreover the level of genes expression change in the progeny, and this explain why some good orange crosses didn’t gave only orange progeny. Especially 1370 (but also 1420,5) seems to be a good genes combination and expression for size and colour and in my opinion are promising parents for crosses with “classic” orange genes like 846, 1016, 670, 810, with also the possibility of “hybrid vigor” for parents not strictly related. I consider crosses like 670 X 1370 or reverse very interesting for size and colour. Paolo

I also believe that AG color is expressed in more than one gene. In fact, I think we see layers of color in the different layers of skin in the AG.

One of many 1260 seeds combined in just the right way with one of many 712 seeds, and somehow made a once-in-a-lifetime cross where the color just came all out. Although your chance for repeating the color characteristics of the 1370 are slim, it's still a cross worth trying!

I would bet the color and shape you are seeing in most of the 1370 offspring is coming from the 1260 side. who knows if that particular 712 triggered something, but a lot of the 1370's are looking like this:

that's a 1260 offspring looking a lot like it would fit in with the 1370's.

Of course, the 1260 is (845 Bobier X 846 Calai). It looks like some 1260 seeds got the 846 color and some did not.

My 699 was grown from the 1260 Weir and my 699 grew 4 or 5 real pretty, mid to dark orange pumpkins. My 556 was dark orange and Bill Foss grew a real nice orange 813.5. So your right the 1260 does produce the orange.

my experience with the 1260 is that you either catch the 845 side (white-salmon, heavy) or the 846 side ( orange, heavy) it's a great pollinator. If you catch the orange ....... good chance you'll have orange offspring. my 851 in 04' was dark orange and 19% over. Hoping for a orange one this year.. Steve

The 603 Muller (845 Nesbit x self) is growing a good percentage of orange kins.

The 1370 didn't look very orange in the pic I saw. But maybe it still had the orange genes in its genetic makeup.

Is the 1370 the only 1260 X 712 cross out there. I don't see any others on aggc. Make the cross and they will grow it!!!!!

I grew a 1088 wayne kenndy its 723 x 712 & from what i can see- is the 712 works well as pollenator , It was my first yr & i grew it in hard ground then squrills ate main off it was for out on secondary ,& way to much third stage growth ,it took of like rocket untill day 25 or so but kept going long time only 5lbs a day average , but was 672 lbs & 20% heavy ,, If it was on main & good ground & right plant pattern it could have easly won elk grove & beat cejas 986 ,, , I think 712 is good pollenator ,, Was supper fast plant & hugh leaves too ,
