I am thinking about growing a cross that contains the 1233 Reiss. I think that it is gotgeous, so I am very tempted my problem is that I only have room for 4 plants, so I am very nervous about growing anything that people have claimed to be a splitter. Does it just grow very fast and need very careful management? Does it have extremely thin walls? Does it pass this characteristic to it's offspring? Or has this all been extremely over blown? The cross I have to me looks like it can go big gorgeous and very orange. So I would hate to by pass it because the splitter information is way over blown. thanks KathyT

Kathy,
What cross are you thinking about growing? My 1233.5 grew slow and steady, and was over 25% heavy to the charts(unfortunately no seeds in it). It ended up at 733 lbs. So far it seems to produce nicely-shaped and colored pumpkins(in general). I don't feel qualified to comment on if it's prone to splitting, or not.

mine had pretty thin walls in spots, but was never in any danger of splitting. The 1233 grows beautiful fruit. I would grow one again if I ever get another seed.

Our 1233 grew really well and ended up at 644lbs. It was very beautiful with no spits. It did have some inner splits that we could see when we carved the pumpkin. Our 1233 had @175 seeds.

I loved my 1233.5 Reiss, slow, low to the ground grower....ramped up fast after the hail. I will be growing another one this year, havent decided what to cross with it yet. I like your 500 Northrup cross, should make for a beauty.

Kathy:
If you are talking about 547 Harnica, grow it!!! I saw it myself and was on the committee that awarded it the Howard Dill Golden Globe award at the Dundee site last October. John says he grew it on something like 100-150 sq ft of plant.

I grew the Reiss 1233.5 last year and I agree it was beautiful color, but mine went down to massive splits at 736 pounds (est). The seeds were immature, but I was able to germinate some samples. They were lacking a solid seed coat. I crossed it with the Checkon 1469 and plan to try it in my garden this spring.

I'm planning on growing the 615 Reiss 06(1233.5 Reiss X self) this year. IMO it was the best looking pumpkin out of the 1233.5, that I've seen pictured. It also went over 10% heavy.

Kathy, Thanks for the compliment on my pumpkin. It was a replacement plant that was put in the end of May. Everything else took over so it only had about 165sq.ft. I was pleased with it's growth and it looked as if you polished it. It also weighed 9% heavy. I hope you and others grow it, Should be an interesting cross, looking forward to growing it myself. Thanks again, John

Christy,
There's a pic of the 615 Reiss 06 on the AGGC.
I have the seed on the way from Martin Reiss.

I grew the 1233 last year, it was a pretty fast grower early on, but slowed down along with everything else in the patch about the second week in Aug. The color was amazing, it had nice shape and a huge stem. It ended up weighing 541 lbs and won the "Gary Keyzer Award" for the nicest looking pumpkin at the weighoff in Nekoosa last year. I pollinated it with the 1125 Frantz. I sold the 541 and only got a few seeds back from it. I plan on giving my 541 seed a try this year, should be a beaut.

A friend of mine grew two 1233 plants. Both plants produced spliters at 300 to 400 pounds. One split on the blossom and the other split on the stem through to the cavity. In my research, it appears that this seed does indeed split at a higher than average rate.... Most the splitters never end up on AGGC

Last year I grew two 1233 Reiss-plants. The first plant was mutated, so I had to remove it. The other one didn’t grow well either; the secondary vines grew very slowly. The pumpkin on this plant split and only reached 749 lbs. The splitting wasn’t because of the growing speed because it grew very slow. As a matter of fact, I have never had a pumpkin growing as slow as this one! The colour of the pumpkin was nice and orange, but the surface lookes like a moon landscape. It is strange how this seed has never grown a pumpkin that is even close to 1000 lbs. There must be a lot of growers growing 1233 last year?
