Did you know that the seed which grew the plant the 1502 Wallace was grown had a "club root" when it germinated? After learning this I guess I'll think twice before I throw out my seeds which germinate with a club root. What do you think?

I've heard several growers say that their personal best came from a club rooted plant. Actually, we grew an 845 Bobier in 2005 that was club rooted. It made 500 lbs earlier in the season than any plant I ever grew. Then it exploded. LOL

That's quite interesting. Thanks for the info. I won't stress out over a club root, if I get one this year....I might even hope for one.

My 1208.5 from the 1068 had a club root as well. Must be inmature radicle tip, I think this is why they take a little longer to germinate then most seeds.

A club root looks exactly as it called..like a "golf club" instead of having a nice straight tap root.

Nice Pic,

I dont get to see my germinated seeds in this fashion. I bet that keeping the seed in the pot too long could cause a club root.....?

Wow, first time I've heard this terminology. I did have a seed do that last year. Problem is, if you germinate the seed in the soil, generally it just sits there and you don't know what's going on until you finally unearth it and see.

does one of the spikes off of the club root eventually become the main tap root, or do you end up with several tap roots? Perhaps this could lead to an advantage?

I have had 2 "club roots". A 695 Handy in 2005 which was about the most aggressive plant I have grown. Had a set at 19ft the last week in June. 2006 I had a 1260 Weir as a backup with a club root identical to Vinemans. My line up was set at this point and I really didn't have time for another plant. The Hammer convinced me to find a place for it in my patch. I initally double planted it alongside another plant in mid May. In late May I dug it up and planted it in a corner of my patch. With little care it produced a 602. Pollinated 7/4 at 20 ft.

Club Root, Yes these seeds do grow slower on top at first, but all those multiple adventitious roots eventually allow the plant to thrive and outpace a normal tap root plant. This is a case of auxin induced growth. I have seen it over and over again using IBA in my seed tests. Plants such as these will grow very fast once they reach the surface.

maybe we should we start a club root club ?

Dumb question, if these "club root" plants do so well, then would an artificial club root plant do well??? Would pinching off the "normal" tap root make a club root?

Try it on some common seed...? Now we're pruning roots... lol

Smoky mtn,
That's an interesting question.

I don't think club roots on average do any worse or better than normal roots.

I'd leave the main root growing but trim off every other side root.

Well we prune the plants to achieve the growth & form we want, why not the roots ?? i'm going to try it on a backup or 2 and see what happens. I'v wondered if making the main roots spread out would help the plant. Guess we will see.

Interesting thought there Russ. This could be induced & might be advantageous.

normally we dont pre-germinate in moist warm paper and baggies but i do think now that because of the "club root" history that the 1068 is developing that this may be the way to start seeds with this kind of history.

time will tell we are experimenting with a couple at this time.

My 723 Bobier from a few years ago had a club root. The plant never grew.

Needless to say, I did the unthinkable and culled a 723...

Sometimes club roots can caused be by disease situations too. I these roots you will find brownish discolored necrotic areas. Auxin induced roots are usually bright white and spider like.
