Would there be any benefit in crossing older genes (865 Mettler 98 x 935 Lloyd 97) (845 Bobier) back into say a 1173 Macari (500 Wallace x 1058 Houghton) both of which have Mettler and Lloyd in there backgrounds. Has anyone
had success doing this?

in 1997 ron and i grew an 887 lorraine orr seed.

at that time it was considered a good proven seed and so in she went. it had also thrown off some big pumpkins in canada as well.

the results were amazing for that time and place.
the pumpkin was a very huge round specimin that very likely would have challenged for a world record.

eventually as happend to us a lot back then she went down mid august due to a very serious bacterial disease.

i was so impressed with the ride she gave us that we have had the picture of it ,ron and i hanging in our carriage house ever since.of all the pumpkins we have grow that 887 gets a seat at the table along with the 1068 and all the 2006 pumpkins she thru off.

last year after advertizing for the seed on bp two growers came forward each sending me the seed.

bad luck and the wallaces seem to go together with this 887 orr seed as the only 1068 plant that did not develop properly and thru off a real clunker of a pumpkin was the plant we pollinated with the 887. go figure

last chance is this year. im hoping that the genetic history of the 887 orr as a pollinator of a second 1068 pumpkin will do the trick.

im not so concerned with 2007 as long as we get a good healthy pumpkin from a good healthy plant. i am with the seed production from this cross in 2008. sould be very interesting.
