Last year my mother in law bought a ''regular'' 20 lb pumpkin that was very orange with a very thick handle, it looked kinda like your normal jack-0-lantern pumpkin but I'm not 100% positive on that, might have been a Cinderella, I really don't have a clue. This year I planted some of them small pumpkin seeds from that pumpkin and now have some pumpkins growing on it, thing that gets me is that these pumpkins are starting out dark green and as it gets a little older I'm noticing stripes on them. My question is, do some of these ''Normal'' smaller type pumpkins start out green like this and then gradually turn orange? I have some other plants started from this exact same pumpkin and these are starting out the same color.

If I post a picture of these week old pumpkins would someone be able to tell me maybe what type they are, or would it take until maturity to be able to really tell?

Yes, normal carving pumpkins(pepo species) start out green and ripen orange. Cinderella pumpkins are quite flattened, I believe(very wheel-shaped). A common carving pumpkin is Howden. It also could be one of many hybrids on the market.

Ron, the females on your 55 are yellow, but on your 71 they are greenish,but they are still only marbel size yet. Its gonna be neat once they get bigger to see what they produce, I'm really excited to see what happens on them two plants.
What about what Doug was saying, did your Cinderellas start out like a wagon wheel?

My 71 Rahe plant has yellow wheel females. The cinderellas last year were all wheels.

Not all field pumpkins start out green. Autumn Gold, and Racer start out yellow and mature to a nice orange in 90 days from planting. There are so many varieties of pumpkins, the catalogs of the hybrids make your head spin, and your wallet ache. Well worth it come fall though.
