Just wondering if there would be an update on this great homepage? Just missing the crosses from 2007.
Brian, your genetics site is very well done!
Thank you so much for all the work!
I hope you will keep it improving.

Best wishes,
Raimund

Hi guys, Thank you for the kind words. I have a ton of data to enter thanks to many many growers but just haven't had the time to sort through it, fill in any missing info, etc.

The process of getting info from the form data you send to me and the online database involves first taking the data from the emails I receive and putting it all into a comma delimited text file using Excel. From there, they get uploaded to an existing Access database I have set up to eliminate duplicates, automatically correct typos, add the year of the seed if not entered, etc. Any difference between the cross info you enter and the seed names already in the database will result in the family tree display and progeny search not working properly so it has to be perfect. From there, I export the data to another delimited file to be uploaded to the MySQL database online for all to see.

I am currently working on getting the data cleaned up and will try my best to have all the 2007 info I have added to the database as soon as possible. This is just a hobby for me but I do want to keep the free info available to everyone so thank you for all your support and for your patience.

I am in favor of a funds drive to help facilitate available time to do the necessary things on your end.

Do you have a paypal account I could send a donation to?

Thank you for the thought, it's greatly appreciated. However, the actual hosting costs me pennies per day and I'm happy to cover that to keep the free open source site up and running. Time is my biggest enemy right now as I have two months left to complete my graduate thesis and four months of work left to finish and I'm afraid no amount of money will change that.

Thank you again for the thought and kind words. I will try my best to get it updated as soon as possible.

That being said by Brian, I know that one of the things he really likes is a good, orange pumpkin seed.

So if you've got a bunch of 670 Daigles, 500 Northrups, 772 Poiriers, or 723 Bobiers sitting around, you might want to send those Brian's way.

Thank you again for the thought and kind words. I don't want anything in return so please hold on to your seeds. Knowing that my site helps a few people is thanks enough :-)

Brian, what program do you use to make the family tree? I have been putting some of my seeds in genolgy pedigree chart but it really is not set up for plants.

double bogey, you can set up a family tree display pretty easy in an Access database. Access handles a single user very well but it's not meant for multiple user situations. I'm using a MySQL database to store all the seed names, cross info, etc. and wrote the php to lookup the female and male of the seed you select using the database. The code continues to lookup the female and male of each seed in every branch until it reaches the predefined number of generations. Once the code has all the branches defined and stored as php variables, it's just a matter of displaying them on screen in the tree format using HTML. There's a bit of Javascript in the code as well but nothing major. A MySQL database can handle literally thousands of users at once without data corruption or speed issues when coded right.

If you just want something for personal use, an Access database is the way to go. I would be happy to send you the Access version of the database if you're interested. brianreid@charter.net

Hope it helps,
Brian

You know, Brian, the appropriate response to my post above would have been, "the 723 doesn't throw orange pumpkins, so send all those to Neal."

Alas, my friend, you have chosen humility, honor, and dignity over hubris and Machiavellian scheming.

And you call yourself a future Eugeneite...
