milford, CT,

Any thoughts on advantages or disadvantages of doing a sibb of a previuosly sibbed seed. Example: 1149.5 Pukos was 998 x 998...what would be the advantage/disadvantage of sibbing 1149.5 x 1149.5? I ask this because original 998's are getting scarce...are there any sibb/sibb then 1st progeny/1st progeny crosses that have been done before and what have their offspring been like compared to the original..remember I am talking about a 2nd generation sibb. It might have been done a few times in the squash lines at some time.
The 505 Fawcett 07 (1105 Glasier x 1450 Wallace) would be pretty close to that exact type of cross.

George Lloyd did many self X self crosses, much the same as a sib, his lines are still prominent in most we grow today.
The 1450 Wallace is a 1068 X sib and did very well.
I plan on crossing the 1450 Wallace with a 1068 Pappez both sibed 1068's,
By doing this your are purifying the genetic line of that seed. If you look back at what George lloyd did, you need at least 3 generations before you cross it with a seperate line.
So the idea would be to do 3 generations of sibbed or selfed 1068's and the same for the 998's and then in 2010 or 2011 cross the 2 lines.
And hang on lol
That's the theory anyway

I couldn't find any pumpkins that were a sibbed seed sibbed.
I guess the 505 is 2 sibbed seeds crossed.
I did find a 2nd generation sibbed squash seed that grew one over 1000. The *552 Sherwood.
*895 Hester (900 Lyons x sib)
*552 Sherwood 02 (895 Hester x sib) grew the *1086 Carlson/Peterson 04.
I say roll the dice and go for that 1149.5 x sib cross.

i agree totally with the z mans reply. thats what i plan on doing with a cross next year that after the season will have four different 1068 seeds in its sibbed background

then in 2009 bring in something good outside of that line

possibly even the 898 back into it if a good seed can be found ( and it germinates)

Hi gentleman. This topic i find very interesting.I have a friend who picked up some seeds from Al Eaton about 8years ago and has been selfing and sibbing these plants until 2006 with a personel best of 1048lbs.What do you think of a 1402 Bosworth crossed into it.Thank you. Carl

not a bad idea carl----- time will tell. so he would be putting a selfed 1068 offspring into a line that was sibbed several times ? worth a shot

Pap. I forgot to mention that he grew a 1030lb in 2005 and many others between 800 and 900lb.I only have room for 4 plant's in my patch so i will have to take my own 792 out of the line up to do this this year and this is going to hurt a little.Thank's alot for your reply PaP it mean's alot.Carl

donkin.theres a reason brooks is wanting a 1068 wallace. Its proven.Theres no guarantees on any planned crosses and its hard to get them tried unless you grow a monster.Having said that paying attention to the breeding is very important.I like sib more than self.I thing introducing new blood is good in the long term

Hi Cojoe.I'm not asking for a 1068 and i'm not pushing for these selfed and sibbed seeds to be grown. They are not even my seeds. All i know is it's going to take a few years of someones life to purify the line of seed. These were Al Eatons seed right from the start and nothing outside of these were crossed into them for many years. My word on that. Hi PaP.By no means is this a ploy to try and obtain seeds.I do however think i am on to something here.We have been discussing this subject on GVGO the last couple of days and JoeP also thought its a very good idea.As far as i'm concerned advice like this is all i need. Thanks for the advice PaP. It means alot. Carl

Yeah Ron, my 505 '07 (1105 Glasier[1068 Wallace x sib] X 1450 Wallace[1068 Wallace x sib) should be quite strong...of course my 609 '07 (1450 Wallace[1068 Wallace x sib] X 737 Fawcett[827 Holland x self) could very easily be "Lloyd Strong".
Talk about crossing 2 separate lines...You'll have to look MANY, MANY, MANY generations back to find any similarities.
But, just another "definite maybe" until it gets proven out! BF
