I thought I would ask what to cross with the 1502 ( yes, I have one, thanks PAP!)...

Here is my list that I have narrowed it down to.

1440 Checkon (998 X 1354)
1354 Checkon (723 X 996 Checkon)
1090 Checkon (1502 X 998)
1212 Checkon (1354 X 998)
1207 Young (1370 X 1068)pollenated w/ Don's 1068 that grew his monster 1662, 13% heavy
1347 Wallace (1068 X 1370) 5% heavy
1174 Wallace (1068 X 1225)
1110 Wallace (1370 X 1068) 9% heavy
977 Wallace (1354 X 1068) 23 % heavy and pollen from WR plant that grew the 1502
Teeter 1092 (1231 Pukos X 1407 Wolf)
Teeter 1059 (1174 Wallace X 1407 Wolf)
1376 Bobier (1231 X 845)
1121 Bobier (845 X 898)

I have others, but these are the growers and seeds I am focusing on. Tough decision to figure out "THE" cross, many questions weigh in your minds when picking this topic. Here are my questions that make it tough decision...

1. What factor do you look for when it comes to making crosses?

2. Do you look for lineage? If so, keeping with the 1068 line and the 1354 line is best idea as a cross with the 1502.

3. Do you look to bring other successful genetic traits and successes into the line, such as the NY growers (Bobier, Teeter, Pukos, Wolf, etc)?

4. I wont be going wrong with the reverse cross, that will be getting the 1502 as the female. My local growing buddy Matt Teeter will also be planting some great seeds, so I have to look at his pollen as possibility too.

I thought this would be great topic as most are going through decision time right now.

rock -look at similar crosses compatability(did a similar cross do well?) Weed out pumpkins in any cross that had dill rings, stem splits and concave blossums.Bonus points for long, wide ,smooth and over the chart.Dont worry about who grew it or where-its all about the genes baby

That 977 Cross looks neat! Is it my understanding the the 1354 plant that pollinated the 1502, produced the 977 and the the 977 was pollinated by the 1068 that grew the 1502?

If thats the case, that a neat double back cross!

Very hard to choose(guess really) what would be the best pollinator for the 1502 Wallace. I really think the 1207 Young could be a great seed/pollinator. You'd be getting the genetics of a 1502 and 1662(1068 Wallace genetics). You'd also have some nice genetics from the 1354 and 1370. I really like the 1207 Young's potential.

If it was me, I'd go 1502 X 1440 Checkon.
Reason, 1502 1068 X 1354 world record pollinated by a worl record maker
1440 998 X 1354 2 world record makers I know it's a new seed, but Look at it's family tree.

YOu are right, you cant go wrong, thanks for all the input. I was looking for responses like EddieZ's and Doung14's. The 1207 and the 1440 are my top two candidates. I agree pap and geo, cant go wrong with any of them. The decision is always tough, that is what makes this stuff so much fun!

Thanks again pap for the 1502. I cant wait to grow it!

I like the looks of doing a 1502 X 1090 Checkon (1502 X 998). Crossing back the 1502 to enforce the shape and % heavy. And, also having some 998 in the mix probably wouldn't hurt things either

the one great thing about the 1502 was ron got ovber 600 seeds from her. we have distributed it two years in a row in our seed promo, given it to many other growers via bubble returns, and still have our own stash if she rteally gets hot.
unlike the 1068 that had a much smaller qty back in 2003
the 1502 is getting a true run by all levels of growers.

hey you

Greencastle, PA

the 1207, 1440 and 1376 both look like they could add a lot to the mix. However, the 1354 can't be counted out; it has everything you need to get one ton (on paper). imagine a pumpkin taping 1788 and weighing 23% heavy.
