If you are planting the 772.2 Poirier this year, what are you thinking about crossing it with ?

Possible crosses that I am considering are the 670 Daigle, 1041.5 Sherwood, 855 Emmons or the 1181.5 Rose (998.6 x 1370).
Also, I have not ruled out the 783 Daletas.
Seems like every week I am dropping one from the list and adding another !

George, I grew the 1041.5 Sherwood a couple of years and had a nicely shaped, smooth-skinned, orange pumpkin. I saw one in Jim's patch that was really red (you were on that patch tour as well). I think it would be a good cross.

George,

I will be growing the the 772.2 Poirier('06) this season.

Possible orange crosses being considered are (in no order of preference)...500 Northrup ('04), 1069.5 Zunino ('06), 802 Kurilich ('05), 1199 Swarts ('05), 1048.6 or 1036 Companion ('03), 364 Webster ('04), or 482 Conley ('04)which is the 846 Calai ('99) X self.

Of course, something "non-orange" might do well too.

It will come down to how well the germination of seeds goes and the vigor of the plants come early July.

How about crossing it with the 1290 Poirier ('07)--
772.2 ('05) Poirier x 500 Northrup ('04)

I was seriously thinking about planting ether the 772 Poirer or the 1250 Kline this year, if I end up growing ether one I plan on crossing it with the 810 Dill.

What I would cross into the 810 Dill would be itself, reason is there isnt very many of the seeds to be found now adays.

If I plant the 772 this year, here are my pollinator choices:

982 Northrup (1101 Northrup x 810 Dill)
452 Wolf (500 Northrup x 723 Bobier)

George,
If you have the 603.5 Muller, I'd consider that one(could add some heaviness to the cross). Didn't you have a cross that was (801.5 Stelts X 567.5 Mombert) X (567.5 Mombert X 801.5 Stelts) or similar. You may want to think about that one, or your 364 Webster.
But I would seriously consider that 670 Daigle, although I think the 603.5 Muller produces very nice orange color more consistantly.

George,
To rich for my blood. I'm planting the poor man's 772 I'm planting the 1290 Poirier, and thinking about crossing it with the 1159 Richards, 641 Andrews, 571 Jepsen/Luce, or 1009 Kurilich. I still have a couple months to kick it around.

I like orange, just in case you didn't know that. lol Kenny

The 988 Janowiak (670x1450) would be the only choice I would consider. More color and some power.

I plan on making these crosses using the 772.2
772.2 x 962.6 Pukos
1149.5 Pukos x 772.2

I am planning on crossing either the 603.5 Muller or our own 588 Young into the 772. Either of these should maintain the color and add to the thickness.

I don't have the 772.2 but I do have the 1290 Poirier. Dan, I'm considering crossing it with your 1186.8. An orange-orange, all Wisconsin cross.

I like the 919 Richards or the 802 Kurlich, Either one could be Bright to say the least.
Old school seed the 846 Calai, 869.5 Calai.
If I wanted to do a different cross, I'd use the 1230 Daletas, and get a modern day 670.

Strange. Seems every year at this time the crossing possibilities overwhelm us. I figured a way to solve the dilemma: go with your first instincts. I decided this year to develop a yearly plan which goes like this:

1. Plant at least one unproven seed. This year it will be the 893 Privitera. I picked it because it's a great cross.

2. Plant at least one of my own seeds. This year it will be two: the 993.5(811 Gerchy x 559 Liggett) and 811 Gerchy(664.5 Liggett x 1030 Armstrong).

3. Plant one seed from another grower within our group(the SOGPG). This year it's the 1368 Liggett.

4. Plant one squash. The 946.5 Carlson/Petersen goes in this year(I plant only one if I have access to pollen for a cross). That squash world record is wide open as far as I'm concerned.

5. Plant one proven winner from a proven grower. The 985 Werner is my pick this year.

We are planning to grow the 772 and will likley cross it with our own 943 Vincent-McGill 06. The seed produced a nice mottled orange Patch best pumpkin for us this year that was 9.8% heavy! The 943 is 518 McGill(982 B. Greer X 1016 Daletas) x 500 Northrup.

Another porssible cross would be the 955 Brinkly!

Thank you all for the input. Lots of great ideas here.....keep them comming.
Looks like a lot of 772's will be hitting the dirt this year.

Doug, the 801.5 x 567.5 cross that I planted was the 774 Mombert. I grew it in my genetics patch. Yes, it was one beautiful pumpkin. The male pollinator that I used was the 600 Glasier (567.5 x 801.5)

Lots of good cross ideas.
I'll toss my hat in the ring for 802, 898 or 1009 Kurilich as pollinator. I'm probably making one of those three crosses this summer if all goes to plan.

Not to take away from George's post, but I like that 946* also Joe! Im planting its mother seed.

George, that 772 is going to be the next 810,670, 603 , 500 Northrup all the Orange growers will want to plant, if it isnt already by the looks of this post. That 772 sure was pretty.

I think the 1159 x 772 is a great idea! If I had room to go orange this yr Id grow the 772 and cross it with my own 781 Frantz (1101 Northrup (670 x 810) x 1125 Frantz (869 Calai x 1225 Jutras)) or maybe my 1176 (1370 x 781). I look forward to seeing all the crosses made with the 772 this yr!
