If the 567.5 Mombert or better yet the 609 Laemmle was removed from the AG ancestry, would we still be seeing the presence of the red gene in todays AGs to some degree?

When I see the picture of Howard Dill posing with some of his world record fruits from the early 80's, I see a lot of color there.

But you're right. Most of what we see for color in modern AGs comes from ONE 609 Laemmle seed.

I don't know how dominant the R gene was in the Laemmle or Willemse.
I do remember Kirk Mombert at 2001 Seminar in Canby, OR, describing many of his 567.5 fruit as almost red.
It was a genetic seminar with some good speakers from Oregon State University.
Heavy R gene = nice orange pumpkins.

I just happen to remember how I admired the 837 Thorson back in '99. It won first at Anamosa that year. It had great shape, color (nice orange) and a nice, shiny, smooth shell. It had no 567.5 in it's background, but did have 530 Gancarz in it. I thought I heard that some of the Gancarz pumpkins were a nice orange or produced bright orange fruit.

The 837 Thorson, like the 815 Andersen, 616 Corkum and 455.4 Andrews, is one of those "two way" seeds that will throw both pumpkins and green squash. I found a packet with four 837's in it on the seed table at the PGVG meeting last year, and purchased it. I am not planting in my genetics patch as planned.
CM, they're yours if you want them......geo.

Thanks, geo., but I got some from Steve Thorson back in '99. I think they're probably still stuck in the back of my freezer. I guess I ought to give them to someone who will plant them (If they germinate). Any takers if I can find them?

In answer to your question Charlie, probably so(IMHO). I believe other seeds would have been found whose genetic make-up would have produced similar red/orange. At the time the 567.5 was found to produce it's deep orange fruit, there was no where near the same demand for its color producing qualities as we have now. Seeds from a single fruit were enough to pretty much squelch the demand. My point is that several other seeds could have/would have been sampled if the 567.5 hadn't been proven out as it was.
I have always wondered about the (selfed 616 Dill'98) 755 Thompson '89...oh, what could have been? BF

Hey Brian, How's it goin'? I think I sent you a message some time back. Did you get it? Can't remember what it was about...

We can only guess what was in the lineage of the 609 Laemmle seed with all those open pollinations in the early days. Something was blowing in the air somewhere along the line.

The 609 Laemmle '89 was grown from the 542 Laemmle '87. Both had good color but weren't exactly "blaze orange". Laemmle obtained his original stock from Richard Wright. I've spoken with Mr. Wright's wife but we weren't able to ascertain where his original stocks came from.

Tom Beachy spoke with Richard Wright a while back. Maybe he remembers?
