Other than the 1290 ?? I am thinking of growing the 772! If others have been -what did they look like ?

There was one grown in europe. It didn't look like the 1290. It was a much lighter orange with rough skin in spots but looked to have similar shape and ribs.

I have been wondering if the 1290 would carry the desireable shape and color more consistently than the 772 itself. If I had a 772 and a 1290 and could only plant one and my goal was big orange and nice shape then I would prob pick the 1290. I seen the 1290 in person and it was absolutely AWESOME! It was crossed back to the 500 Northrup which had a great color and was est 1300 lbs. So the 1290 has (my opinion) great color, and size potential. It has less 1332 Werner in it which the 1332 can toss nice color but it can also toss medium or light cream cantalouped fruit. I assume the 772 offspring PA Punkin mentioned resembled the 1332 more. The only possible dislike I have with the 1290 is that the pollinating 500 plants fruit was kind of flat with a concave top. So I think color and size potential for the 1290 are perfect and I would be a tad concerned that the offspring might cary a flater profile than the nice perfect shape of the 1290. Id love to hear some others opinions as I think AG genetics are still more of a guessing game than a science! Above is just my guess....

Mike...I've thought pretty much the same thing. There's quite a bit of color variability in the 670 Daigle offspring, and I think the same may prove true for the 772 Poirier.
I think the 1290 Poirier could be a future great color producer, for the reasons you stated. Maybe a modern day 801.5 Stelts. We'll see.

Maybe I'm bitter over not getting a 772 to plant but I'll plant a 670 and 603. I wish all the best with the hopes of trading for the best orange crosses in fall 2008!! Jim

I am planning on planting a 1290 Poirier for my orange
"kin for this season. I agree that the potential is there
for size and color. I hope it will have the same shape.
Time will tell. The 1290 is simply a great looking pumpkin.
