I'd like to hear your thoughts on what seeds you think can produce large orange pumpkins. There are a number of great orange producing seeds out there, but not all of them seem likely to produce over 1200 lbs. I'm not necessarily looking for blaze orange, but a pretty decent orange at least.

Doug,

In my opinion, the following are some of what you are looking for: (Random order)
772.2 Poirier (06)
1069.5 Zunino (06)
904 Northrup (04)
500 Northrup (04)
1199 Swarts (05)
1250 Kline (05)
1046.5 Bowles (06)
802 Kurilich (05)
1016 & 1230 Daletas (01)
1370 Rose (03)

I am sure that other growers will post other good selections that I didn't think of.

Doug, I had pretty good luck with the 1250 kline, 360 ott last year. It was a vibrant orange, (traffic stopper). Some unprovens might be the 1462 Gibson (H.Dill winner at OVGPG 07) and 1317 rose from last year? Jim

At this point I'm looking only at 998.6 offspring as potential world record beauties (or the 998 itself, of course). That doesn't mean that others couldn't do it, but we know that the 998.6 goes bigger than anything ever has and many of the offspring are very pretty pumpkins. So, why not?
1. 1689 Jutras, if you can get one. I've never been more excited about the potential of a world record pumpkin, and I'm not just talking about the fact that it was so mind-blowingly huge. What a cross. I think that the 1225 as pollinator will produce some very beautiful world record contenders. I'm no expert, but my theory is that the orange trait tends to come through better on the male side.
2. 855 Emmons (998.6 X 500 Northrupp). Again, a very nice looking 998 offspring with a known orange producer on the male side.
3. Brace yourselves for some shameless self-promotion here (sorry)! I really think that my 1020 Isom EST (aka 1002)has potential to grow beautiful monsters. It's a 998.6 X 955 Brinkley.

Thanks for all the replies! A lot of good suggestions that I'll consider.
I may only be growing three competition plants this year, so it's difficult to narrow it down.
I'm not planning on growing my 1041 this year, but am planning on growing another 603.5 Muller. After breaking 1000 lbs. last year, I might grow one seed with great genetic potential, to see what I can grow here. I do prefer decent color though. A little over a month left to decide.

I would suggest the 1317 Rose.

It is 1370 x 998.6 and the 1317 itself is in my opinion, the biggest good looking pumpkin ever. It had about perfect classic shape, AND was a very nice deep speckled orange.

With 998.6 added to it, all it may do is get even bigger.

Imagine the line up in a 4 pumpkin patch: 1689 Jutras (998.6 Pukos x 1225.4 Jutras), 1317 Rose (1370 Rose x 998.6 Pukos), 1159 Richards (919 Richards x 998.6), and why not a 955?

In a good patch, with a good grower, if one of those did not produce a 1200+ beauty, I would be shocked.

THe one I am most impressed with is the 1689, which was again, itself very good looking. Not the darkes Orange, however, it had an Excellent Shape.
