Any thoughts on the 900 Wallace 07. I think it may be a sleeper.

The 900 Wallace is the 1068 x 670 Daigle. The 670 had nice color and shape. I think the 900 could produce some very nice pumpkins.

I am pretty sure Ron stated it was either damaged or not growing as well as his 1400 lb counterpartsat the time he picked it in late August. It was used as a backdrop for a competive eating contest (US vs Japan) held at his house the same week as the patch tour. Pretty impressive that it grew that large with over a month to go and it was his best pick to go. Ron takes excellent care of his plants so any seed has a great chance of being superior.

Rob, you say, "Ron takes excellent care of his plants so any seed has a great chance of being superior." This raises a question in my mind: since when does plant care affect genetics?

When I think about a seed's potential, I consider the following factors:

1. Parents' weight in comparison with other plants in the same patch

2. Parents' % heavy in comparison with other plants in the same patch

3. Parents' phenotypes

From what I know, I wouldn't bet on the 900 (in general) being exceptional. However, we know genetics to be a sort of "craps shoot," so I wouldn't summarily dismiss the possibility of a 900 growing something nice.

The 735 Pukos (846 Calai x self) is an important seed to keep in mind right now. I didn't see any reason to believe that it would be very good, yet it has grown several large pumpkins.

If you believe in it, then plant it. Otherwise, we'll never know whether it's good or not.
