I now have both of these started, Whohoo.
Looking for ideas!!!!!!!
705 X 1420 Larue is very high on my priority list.
705 X 898 Knauss is also right up there.
567.5 Mombert X 898 Knauss is very high also
But help me make a plan,
I will also set a pumpkin on each of the 705 and 567 as selfed.
Also have the 825 Shymanski and 562 Rose to remake the 801.5 Stelts.

wohoooooooo Eddy!!!
I never belive that 567 can germinate!!!
This is really hard choose what crosses do because these are propably laste 705 and 567 that germed, there will be no more I think. 567 x 898 sounds awesome also 705 x 898 is nice but I think best wil be if you cross one of fruits 567 with 1502 wallace if this possible, this should be great cross. 705 x 1420 is nice too

Eddy, I still think that a 705 X 998 would be awesome, 705 X 898 is very nice to. Either one would be in my patch!

For the 567.5 I would go with 1068 Wallace, that way you would get the 898 Knauss & re-inforce the 567.5 on the mothers side of the 1068.
I don't know if you have one but the 664 Liggett x 705 Stelts would throw a lot of color into the 664 which produces monsters.

Eddy,
705x1420 could be incredible
I also like 705x842 or 1446 Eaton
Mikkal's 705x998 idea sound quite promising too.
Of course, my 1230 Daletas x 801 Black would add some more good 705 Stelts, 567 Mombert, and 620 Black genes....

567x898 sounds nice
The 1041 McKie might prove to be more reliable for big and heavy though. I think it would make a great pollinator.
However, who would pass up the oppertunity to make a 567x998 Pukos? A combination of the champions of the past and the present should do well in the future.
The 567.5 line is the only one that I know of that has grown 2000+ pounds on one plant on numerous occasions. After seeing the 1689 and 1631, I have no doubt that a single pumpkin could handle growth to over 1 ton. So, I think either 567x1041 or 567x998 could be an excellent pairing of the energy and fruit characteristics (shape and thickness) that are necessary to break 2000.

I would vote against selfing them, at least the 567, because that's been done a bunch of times already. I would want to see each have unique crosses.

of the seeds listed in your diary, here's what i think would be cool:

1042 x 567
567 x 511 (or reverse)
772 should hit the 705 or 567 one way or another
842 x 567

Congrats Eddy. I believe the 1016 Daletas is a Howard Dill favorite. 1016 Daletas x 705 Stelts and 1016 Daletas x 567.5 Mombert. 940 Mombert 00 x 567.5 Mombert. 705 Stelts x 567.5 Mombert. 1016 Daletas x 705 Stelts x 1016 Daletas x 567.5 Mombert in 2009...or 1016 x 705 x 1016 in 09.

The 998 is very high also, But even better news, The third 705 has now started to send out a Tap root.
So I have 2 705's going, I will sib for sure, And i agree with you Andy, the 567 selfed never did aqnything, but the seeds were tough to start, I was only going to keep the line alive,
I am going to clone for sure.
The 772 Poirier X 705 Stelts is very interesting as they are very distant in the genetic pool.
Skip, never thought of that, Mother, Daughter thing, I know Todd Kline sure likes that type of Cross.
I still have the 935 lloyd gowing, I was hoping the 875 lloyd would have poped but Oh well.

As someone who likes orange, I think 567.5 X (801.5 Stelts x self or sib) would be a nice cross(and reverse). Maybe cross with 1008 Reiss(801.5 X self).

Wow. A 567.5 germinated?!? 16 year old seed....nice work, Eddy.
567 x 898, or 998.
And 802 Kurilich x 567.
567's flaw was always the cruddy/sagging/sloping shape it introduced into the AG line. I'd be more concerned with breeding thickness / good shape into it than anything to do with color. Besides, the brilliant color that 567 gets credited for didn't emerge until a few generations down from the 567, and that may have been lightning in a bottle. I don't think today's best color seeds can be helped by 567. But 567 can be helped by today's best shaped fruit.

the genetics of 10, 15 or more years ago, brought growing to were it is now, almost all of todays pumpkins have some trades of those pumpkins. Cross-breeding made them stronger, and brought them to a new level. what is the point of reintroducing the genes that form the basis of todays plant genome?

the cooks, to this day, I don't think there is a better color seed than the 705 Stelts, If it were a seed of today and was planted by ther Hitters, you would see new world records, The 705 grew a pumpkin that measured well over 1400 pounds in 2001 and it also had a pumpkin on a back vine that was over 1000.
Also I think you answered your own question, when you said cross breeding made them stronger, and it's time to do that.

OK then. 802 Kurilich x 705, for a nice back-cross....

iceman, by cross breeding i ment introducing new genes,to a certain plant. both 705 and and 1420 share the 801 the 567.5, the 562, the 825 and more. Newer seeds like the 1420 developed there producing trades on the combined qualities of all those seeds.
although its very exciting to grow a legend like the 567.5 i doubt it wil enhanse a modern seed, because all of its qualities are already part of those seeds.
But it wil fun to watch what it brings. And dispite my scepsis,,i hope it brings you something very special!
good luck edde!!

Great job Eddy. A little GA3 makes a world of difference.

An 801 remake would be tempting. I thought it had been done but AGGC says "no". Hmmm.

567 x 898 sounds very interesting...

Not disbuting your comments at all. But the 1420 Larue has very little of the 567 genes in it, and they go back 4 generations, Now by introducing the 705 Stelts into the 1420 line, is the start of a new line of seeds.
If we continue to work with newer seed lines, we will narrow our future, because we have come to the crossroads where we are using very few seeds to push forward with, ie the 1068 wallace, 998 Pukos, 1370 Rose, etc, with very close family trees.
Now step 2 of my plan is to take the offspring of the 1420 X 705 and cross it with the 705 X 898, so I end up with a plant that has 50 % 705 and 33 % 898 and a mix for the balance.
Now another reason why I'm so excited about this is because they are not main stream crosses, they will be unique, and hopefully productive.
In other words, would you grow my seed from a 750 pounder that has the same cross as Ron Wallaces 1500 pounder, I think not, and I wouldn't either. But if I have a cross not made before, my chances are better.
We'll see what the future does with this, but you have to go outside the box sometimes, or in my case, I prefer outside the box.

uHHHH, let me see here,,,, I think Id go with the idea that Owen Olson came up with for a cross a few months ago Eddy, and a great idea by Owen it is, I might add! ,lol.

(((((1068 Wallace x 705 Stelts)))))

not only would it be a great cross, but could very well be the longest distance pollen has ever had to travel between two patches to ever do a pollination! lol

Eddy, what an interesting dilemma with such great old genetics!!!

My thought would be to keep the old genetics together on at least 1 cross 705 X 567, this would make for a great seed stock in the future to break up the current lines.

I also like your train of thought on the 1420 and would agree on trying that cross as well.

In many talks with Ron W. he has expressed more than a passing interest in crossing the 705 with the 1068. He has told me that this cross would bring the 1068 full circle. As much as I hate to agree with Brooks this is one you should seriously consider, after endorsement from credible grower like Ron, Owen it's worth the try. (just having fun Brooks so please don't beat me with your black jack LOL)

What ever you decide in the end will be killer crosses and I hope to get seeds from all of your '08 crosses. I commend you on getting such old seeds to sprout and preserving such great oldie genetics good luck!!!

Thanks again Dave and to Joel for theses seeds.
now I've done everything I can, but getting the flowers into the US and reverse, is going to be next to impossible.
But the 705 will live large in the 1450 Wallace and the without a doubt. I also like the 567 X 705 just because.
I haven't given up on the flowers yet, I am only 3.5 hrs from the border, I would make that trip to get the flowers state side and mail them from there. Love a challenge
Eddy
