Has this cross ever been done before? The 664 is a strong line that goes heavy, as well as the 842 which has produced many giants, and has offspring that have made 1600 pounders, Ex 998 and 1041. What do you think of this cross?

I think that would be a very promising cross Logan, although my personal preference would still be the 664 x 1287 Van Kooten or 1367 Rose. Good luck.

Could be a very good cross Duncan. I think 664 X 898 Knauss could have awesome potential. I don't know if there are any(or enough) 898's around for that cross to be done. Maybe crossing the a selfed 898 into the 664, would be the way to go?

I think the knauss is a very good seed, however, everyone has crossed the 899 in to just about everything now. I think you could achive what you want with the knauss with just about any thing with a 1068 wallace, it goes heavy and has knauss in it. Almost all of the modern seeds have one of the four seeds in it 846, 898, 723, and 845 as parents. 1041 would be good but they will go for alot this year has the 842 and 1068, goes heavy.

Logan you know what I would do so I won't repeat it. I go back to your first post on October 8 where you say you want something that will grow a big one and will also cross well with a 664. The obvious answer would be another 664. If you look at some of the trends, the 1450 Wallace for example, huge success. Joe Jutras took it a step further and crossed the 1450 with another 1068 which produced his 1306, the mother of his 1507 this year. If you can't get another 664, maybe consider the 1173 Liggett. Lots more 664 with the 846 Calai as well. Anyway buddy, good luck, you got all winter lol.

I crossed the 664.5 with the 1100 Hestor this year(my 993 went 5% heavy), the pollinator of the 1100 was off the largest (orange) 898 to date(1257.5 and it went 18.59% heavy.) I look forward to growing the 1313 next year.

Andy, let me know what your opinion is on this. Sure there would be great potential in a self or sib, but I just don’t like the idea of doing this. You can only make a line so pure, and it limits the potential for variance good or bad. The 1068 is or is one of the best seeds ever, top weight was 1662. The 1041 introduced some new things into the 1068, neither parent was even 1200 pounds but there was something there that made this a good cross, largest 1631. 1450 another great cross, 1068XSib, both parents were large, same genetics were refined makes monsters, largest 1556.

Both are good crosses from the 1068, the 1450 is a great seed but the 1041 has that surprise factor, not to mention its gone over 20% heavy.

So in other words what other line(s) would you add to the 664.5 and why.

Logan, I think I'm going to cross my 664.5 with the 1566 Rodonis . Backup pollinator will be the 1231 Rodonis . So post what you decide to cross with next year, and with a little help & luck maybe we will have a couple of good 664 crosses to swap. good luck growing next year. Bill

I always wanted to do a 664 x 985 Werner, but settled for a 1524.5 Liggett x 985 cross instead. Both pumpkins went heavy, although they didn't achieve their full potential with me growing them. I can't wait to grow them next year.

My thing is genetic diversity-cross pumpkins with good characteristics but with only distant parentage, as one would do with livestock.

I'll give you my opinion although there are many folks on BP who are way more qualified than me. Dan gave his reasons for crossing his 664 with 1100 Hestor. For me I look at what makes the 664 the seed it is. You are right on as far as sibbed/selfed seeds go. This method does reinforce the characteristics of the chosen fruit. I go back to the 1287 Van Kooten. We had a similar discussion on GVGO about a year ago. The 1287 Van Kooten is 1142 Van Kooten x 1097.5 Beachy. The 1142 Van Kooten is a 1066 Vezzolo (selfed 845) x 1367.5 Rose (723 x 845) The 1097.5 Beachy is 845 x 723. So this cross is essentially a lot of 723 and even more 845. The 1142 is ranked 14th in the world (top 5 weights) and the 1097.5 is ranked 10th at the time. I suggested the 1287 Van Kooten and 1367 Rose as a good cross because they are both more available than the 1097 Beachy, the father of the 664. All things being equal, I would cross the 664 with the 1097 Beachy, or the 1287 Van Kooten or the 1367 Rose. IMHO, this could produce offspring capable of attaining similar results as the 664 Liggett. You of course will have to choose a pollinator that works for you. As I stated, I would love to be in your shoes, good luck.
