When you are creating a cross, does it matter which is the male and female. I mean do you want your female to be heavy and the male to bring different genetics or does it really matter.

the female is usually planted for immediate results for present year based on the seeds past performance.so for that reason id say most people pick a seed that will produce immediate results.
the male pollinator is used to blend in the traits of that seed stock into this years pumpkin. which in turn produces next years result.

when it comes to the genetic whys and hows most of us are just guessing.
we have no formal training, lab equipment or the knowledge to truely know what we are creating and how to create it. it can be a deep subject.

i use the hit and miss method. i add in what i think could be a good combination and go from there. mostly though i cross combinations to add weight, remove imperfections. adding better color as well. coloe being the last consideration. weight, shape and seed history means more

In a male vs. female debate, the only way to really compare apples to apples is when you have an exact reverse cross, as in the 998 and 1231 Pukos seeds. The pollinating plant of the 998 grew the 1231, and the 1231's pollinator grew the 998.

So far, I think it has shown that the mother is somewhat more influential in the "look" of the offspring, but not necessarily the weight (998 has been somewhat more successful so far), but we should know better in a few years when most of them have been planted.

Quinn Werner sure is good at picking out a new seed and growing it big . He goes more on how the male has done, then by how the female has done.
