One of my hopefuls next season is the 1104 Van Kooten. All I can see is 935's and 865's all over the place. I've been looking for that perfect ( or close ) pollinator. My finalists are 1222 Sandvik ( 1041 McKie x 1502 Wallace wow! ) 1308 McKie, Jerry Rose may be on to something here, 965 Pukos
(998.6 Pukos x 1308.5 McKie)or 1100 Hester. I don't normally do this but what are some opinions for a father to a whole lot of 723 and 845. Thanks.
PS- thinking outside the box is OK, in fact encouraged.

I say forget the genetics and choose a seed that gives you the best chance of growing a fruit with qualities you desire.

The quality I desire is weight. I've been a skeptic of % heavy, but being an open minded guy I thought I'd go in that direction. The 1104 VK went 15% heavy and is full of 1142 VK which oftens grows fruit over chart. I also like the long shape. The 1100 Hester has 898 Knauss in it but it also went 18.25% over, maybe that's why Dan used it as a pollinator for his 664 Liggett. The 1308 McKie went 12.24% over and Jerry Rose used it as a pollinator for his 1490.5, 1446, 1290.5, 1244 and 1108. That's good enough for me. I gave the 340 Beauchemin a lot of thought but a post Brooks did made me consider other choices. Still early yet.
Carl, I gave the 958 some thought too lol.

Andy. I almost forgot the 1030 Ken Rose(03).It is the 806.0Rose(1999)x1172Greer(02). The 806 is the 754Wentzel(98)x914Wentzel(98). The 1030 was pollinated approx 6ft out. This one is going to see some serious sq footage in my patch when i'm ready for it . Carl.

lol Andy,,gotcha hooked on % heavy?
Take a look at the photo gallery pics Brett posted of the 1100 and the 1257.5 pollinator, both fruit went over 18% heavy and the 1257.5 was the largest reported offspring of the 898 along with being perhaps the best looking of all the fruit grown from that famous seed. Hopefully these traits will come through in the crosses made. We'll see next year how they do.

hey you

The 1100 Hester is great for all of the reasons that Dan mentioned. I hope it gets planted more in the coming years, because there should be some monsters grown on it. It looks like it could be an outstanding pollinator too.

How many plants can you grow per year? All of your selections have a lot of potential, so maybe you should plant them all and wait until you've seen the plants grow for a couple of months before you make your final call. Remember, when we talk about 1104's or 1100's or whatever, we're speaking in generalizations. You never know which of those seeds you have will actually turn out to be the best until you plant them.

Did the 1100, 1257.5, 1348 or 1400 Hester see much dirt this year? I could find only one fruit over 1000# grown from any of them. The crosses all look great on paper, and three of the four were way over the charts.

fyi charlie,,the 993(+5%)was awful close to 1k and it was in the end of patch where the plants were planted one week later(May 8th), even though pollinations hit the sweet spot none of those 3 later plants fruit came up to the others in the patch,,,still a mystery here but needed explaining

the cold cloudy weather in the first 10 days of June is my only guess,,the root growth was inhibited when they first were out of the hoops. therefore delaying the action all season long????

Andy a twist that might fall outside the proverbial box. 901 Lyons (06) 1446 Eaton x 842 Eaton.
1010 Daletas (07) 998.6 pukos x go heavy 998 Knauss. Since you have it in hand, the 1100 Hester is a good choice as well.

Alright the cold has set into the brain along with the fingers. We all know what it should be 898 Knauss. Sorry to everyone for dragging the post out.

I grew the 1100 Hester this season and was impressed with the plant and fruit. It was the 915 Lovelace ( 1100 Hester x 1041 McKie ) 19% heavy. It was also the pollinator for my 829 Lovelace ( 1404 McKie x 1100 Hester ) which was 11% heavy.

Only 1100 Hester that I have heard about being grown this year was from Quinn Werner, said it grew to about 600 lbs then split, but the weather could have played a big part in that also.
