It seems like that canteloup-like exterior of AGs is determined genetically and not growing environment.

Would any of you agree/disagree?

What do progeny from cantelouped X Smooth pumpkin crosses look like? Can anyone chime in?
I'd like to know how this trait is controlled, and looking at the progeny of several such crosses would give us a good guess as to what's going on. Then we could come up with rules of thumb to better cross to meet our individual breeding objectives (weight vs beauty).

If I only had access to aggc sigh.

canteloping occurs with age on just about all giant pumpkins.
some will be more effected by age than others. yes im sure generics does play a roll but its not the only reason.

its a sign that the outer skin is getting tough and resisting expansion. ( thats why during late season ( on big pumpkins ) you also get small cracks and sapping on the shoulders
)
keeping the pumpkin covered with a sheet or overhead shade cover most of its life will help the onset of canteloping.
