Have a 842 Eaton and I want to make the most of it LOL.. .

Just wondering what peoples opinions are on the top pollinators (male supply) right now. I am looking not only at the resulting pumpkin on the female side, but the ability to produce large pumpkins form that females seeds as well. I am finding it Tough to research this information.

Some Examples of what I mean:

The 224 Leland was used as a pollinator resulting in the 1350.5 Starr which as now produced 726, 1234 and 1528 offspring. . .

The 1450 Wallace was used as a pollinator resulting in the 1161 Rodonis which then produced 1208 and 1521.5 offspring . .

What others can you guys come up with???
(Please don’t include the 1068 Wallace or 998 Pukos which I don’t think I will ever get my hands on . . .)

If it were me, I'd do the 1420 Larue, Joe pukos did it, hasn't been grown, But if you want to follow the 998 and 1231, this would and could give you something very close.

Another interesting cross would be the 1139 Sherwood, Hope my memory was right withat number, But it throws big and heavy.

901 Hunt, bringing back the 842 into this one might be scary

The 1041 Mckie is 842 x 1068 and I would say that cross hasn't worked out to bad. I am not aware of any 1068 growing in Colorado this year, but you could use some pollen from my 1450, which in my book is the next best thing to a 1068 genetics wise.

By the way the Wiz has announced he is growing a 998 and posted he is willing to share pollen so that is another option.

Ghopson, I live in the Springs and will be planting a 1053 Miller-723 Bobier x 992.5 Glasier, also a 519.5 Veader-1260 Weir x 998 Pukos. If interested I'll trade Pollen. If not thats fine.

My personal picks: 1142 VanKooten or 1247 Handy. A little love for the Northwest seeds.

Another intriguing match would be the 500 Wallace, the reverse, of course, of the 1068, which was the pollinator for Dan & Jason's 1041.5...hmmm...that's a decent seed...

Anyhow, the 1142 and 500 are both available, along with a host of other excellent potential pollinators, at the following:

(Shameless plug for the PGVG auction this weekend.)

Good luck deciding! :)

I hope to do the 842 Eaton x 1142 van Kooten cross and reverse if they both germinate.

Jamie, the 1041 McKie was one of the first to catch my eye LOL. . .love the 1450.

Ice man the 1139 Sherwood looks really good
and Nilbert, I saw the 500 was on the Auction, and like the 1142 too. I have a 695 Handy which grew the 1247 so maybe thats the route to take .. .

what does everyone think of the 723 Bobier as a pollinator? The 1123 Bobier 05 is 732 X 723(sib)?? What makes Knauss so attractive?? Or for that matter the 723.

985 Werner seems to be on a good track right now as well??

I'm not doubting any of the above adivce, but instead just trying to learn what I should be looking for.

If you're looking for a pollinator for your 842 I think any of the following would work nicely.

912 Hunt- 898 Knauss x 842 Eaton*
994.5 Hunt- 842 Eaton x 898 Knauss*
1133 Kline- 1631 McKie x 1041 McKie
898 Kline- 1041 McKie x 1631 McKie
765 Privitera- 1068 Wallace x 1041 McKie
722 Privitera- 1041 McKie x 1068 Wallace

If I saw right the 723 has grown 40 over 1000 lbs.

greg, another one to consider as a pollinator could be the 1500.5 revier. Its got a super 985 werner and 1207 young in it.It might mix well into the 842.

How about a 1301.5 Eaton and make a 1446 remake? or how about the 1093 Hunt it is 1068 Wallace X 842 Eaton?

Hey g, in my opinion I think the 1502 Wallace is one of the best pollinators. Virtually everyone of the pumpkins grown have gone over 10% heavy, which in my book makes for a good pollinator. The 1139 isn't bad either.

Jim you should grow my 1202 1420 x 1139 i just cant seem to get it grown a new grower in Austria weighted in at 521.40 Scharf, Maria 11 % over the charts Just needs to see some dirt

898 Knauss which isn't easy or cheap to get it seems. There are a few 898 X self's out there you may want to consider.
Maybe 1257.5 Hester(898 X 845).

1/21/2009 10:37:28 AM

hey you

Maybe not an obvious choice, but the 1102 Pukos may have what you're looking for in both size and color.Very heavy fathers from 06 to 08. I like how the 998.5 was crossed back into the 1159.

1102 Pukos
/ \
1159 Richards x 998.5 Pukos
/ \
919 Richards x 998.5 Pukos
/ \
939 Richards x 1231 Pukos

These are some good ideas everyone . . . and thank you for the extra emails that go even further into what a grower is thinking as the get to a cross they want to use.

Keep them comming if you can

Thanks

right on james. unfortunately with so few seeds available from the 1450 ( 2006 1068 x 1068 sib) that we will never realize what it could have done had more seeds been available.

possibly the reason there were so few seeds is because of its purity in the initial 1450 cross.
which may also explain why its such a great pollinator as well.

im hoping with the couple i have left that i can do a 1450 x 1450 sib this summer. which just may create the ultimate purified seed for future years ----- as a pollinator or female as well.
