I know this has been debated before but, which is better or is there any real difference?

selfed will be more line bred than sibbed.which is better? either could be better depending on the actual seed or seeds grown

sibbed by far would be my choice. if the two plants (seeds) sibbed both produced great pumpkins? your made in the shade

first we grew the 1068 wallace in 1993 (845 bobier x 898 nauss. one of the greatest seeds of all time results wise.

then the sibb took place in 2006

example
in 2006 the 1068 wallace produced the 1502 world record
in 2006 the 1068 wallace produced the 1450 2nd in world
the 1450 was sibbed with pollon from the 1502.

although a very small quantity of seeds were produced in the 1450 every one planted has grown very thick walled large pumpkins.

i dont think im bragging when i say its every bit as good a pollinator as the 898 nauss which was the male pollinator for the 845 bobbier that grew the 1068 in 1993. unfortunately there are just not enough 1450 seeds to prove it out.

some lucky grower however will have a chance to get the last one available to auction when we have our sngpg auction mid february. a great group purchase for sharing of the pollon.

It will be intresting to see how the 1325 Star Does this year. The 227 Leland x sib. The 227 is throwing out huge pumpkins as both the plant and the pollinator. The 227 being a pumpkin that was never grow to full potential thus hidding its true power.

I'm not an expert in this area, but to answer the question "better" depends on what the desired end result would be. When you do any cross you are coming up with a new genetic makeup. Neither selfed nor sibbed crosses give you the same genetics as the parent. They will be similar in many ways but selfed seeds will generally give you more enhanced genetic expressions of the parent. This can be both good and bad depending on what you are looking for. Sibbed crosses generally wouldn't give you the same number of enhanced expressions because I believe not every seed in a pumpkin has the exact same genetic makeup (you see this where the seeds from the same pumpkin can give you different pumpkin colors in some cases). This means that the end result tends to be a little more mellowed expression, for lack of a better term, in sibbed crosses. I think this is the same thing that both Joe and Pap are saying. I prefer sibbed crosses for the same reason. Love the 1450.

I think that you gain mostly extacly what you already have with a selfed seed, just more of the same, but with a sibbed seed, because like Jamie said above, you can gain much of the same as the orginal AND get a genetic varriance that hopefully enhances the new seed even more.

The truth is that no one can definitely say one is better than the other. I do agree with ghopson that you are more likely to achieve what you already have with a selfed seed, which is great when you think about it. Sibbs are in vogue now but selfed seeds will soon gain the recognition they deserve.
