From a newbie. What is responsible for some giants to have deep orange coloring while others are pale? Cultivar? How do Wyatts' (I hope thats not a bad word) fit into this, or even another cross?

What are you looking to grow big & orange or big & heavy? The genetics of the seed determine the color of the seed. Some are crossed to produce big & orange and others are crossed to grow the heaviest pumpkin possible for weighoffs.
The seeds that grow the really giant pumpkins come from Dills Atlantic Giant Pumpkin Seeds. The seeds you will get here on BP.com are Atlantic Giants. If you just want a big orange pumpkin Big Max & Prizewinners grow to 100-200 lbs.

I hope that made some sense. Man, this is harder to explain than I thought lol. Also, if you do a site search you can get alot of good info.

Lundy you can have both!!! There are growers that make crosses of AG's that have potential to throw 1000+ pound beautiful orange fruit. That pumpkin might make it a bit larger than settling for the prizewinner option. I have some crosses of Wallace/Northrup seeds that might provide ya the outcome you are seeking. Feel free to email me at PGR120q@aol.com and I would be happy to set ya up. Peter

1016 Daletas. If you can find one of them or one like them. That is the parent of the 1225 Jutras. That is likely the best looking Giant ever grown. It had very good shape, and was almost Red.

Maybe a selfed 1016.

Could try to track down: 841 Dill, 837 Pley, 820.5 Glisczinski, 740 Simmons, 679 Christensen

All either selfed or sibed 1016. that is mamma of the 1225.4 Jutras:

It was only 0.75% heavy, but so far as I know of the best looking ever Giant.

You could ask Pap about his 1110. That was another really nice looking one. Greenhousin's 464 Perry is a selfed 1110, and should have some really nice round orange monsters in its magic.

Hey Lundy,
Your right it is a great site & some great people. I am a new grower too and want to grow big & orange. You should take Peter up on his offer some great genetics there. Also, like Longbeard said the Wiz had a purty pumpkin this year. It was the 895 Grande (1016 Daletas x 1385 Jutras). Wiz is a good guy & sent me some great seeds this year. I plan on planting the 895 this year. Good Luck! Paul
