I need everyone’s help, I am doing a large scale squash breeding project for the next 2 to 3 years. I will be growing year round in a green house to speed things up.

I am looking for any squash (AG variety) that could add positive attributes to some of the good squash lines that we have, or an over looked seed, it is ok if it has 895 and 900 in it, just looking for stuff that has something good to offer, could even be crossed with pumpkins.

Thanks everyone
Logan

I think everyone in the squash community has been wanting to diversify the squash lines that we have. What I am trying to do will hopefully benefit us all and create a better squash line or lines. I have the resources to do this and have a good breeding plan if I can just get a few opinions on what to use for this plan. I will try to get it put onto a computer program and up on my diary so everyone can get a better idea of what I am trying to do.

Thanks
Logan

It looked way better on Microsoft Word but dont know how to up load it to this website if some one tells me how maybe i could put the file on a website and put the link here so you can see the easy to read version.

I realize there is a lot of pumpkin genetics in this, which is what i wanted, however I believe i have it set up where the green gene can always be re obtained.

I really like genetics and I realize this is going to be alot of work but I also think it could be fun for me as well as benificial to everyone else, I also plan on keeping record of all colors produced so maybe we can learn more about colors in AGs.

What is the cross on the 1119 razo?

Logan, There a lot of growers myself included who are a couple of years into a green X orange program. I have great hopes for my seed line too.

There are few pitfalls along the way. Firstly they do not always go green and secondly you need dark green pollen to bring them back quickly. I discovered this in 2008 as my 752* (848 x 1420) cross went orange and resulted in a vigorous plant that split on me at 729 at a young age. I crossed it with the 1055* Pitura and hope to plant both crosses again this year.

Another issue is that of Deep ribs. The 848* seed line and some of its many offspring like to grow with deep deep ribs.
I you have for some reason a dry spell or Calcium mass flow interruption into the fruit an intersecting sag line or Dill ring will stop you cold. This happened to Matt last years as it did to me on my 1073* in 2006 and another of my large 848* crosses in 2007. Both years i lost potential world records. I searched for a moderately ribbed child and settled on the 1055* after talking with Dave Pitura. The jury is still out on the cross though.

Also of concern is the difficulty with which squash have in setting fruit. Some growers tend to think this is caused by a squash plants better uptake of nitrogen. All of my 848*s have had a difficult time in setting fruit. Backing off nitrogen helps but it also slows down plant growth. The key here I believe is to find one that can set fruit earlier than normal. The 1055* seams to do that well enough. Last year I got it to set in June.

Lastly I know of another grower who has a good heavy proven green line that went well over 1k as a squmpkin. It was about 95% green. That would be John Vincents 1132 08 at 10.5% over the chart. The genetics are all green but for some reason it decided to turn a little yellow.

Thanks Russ,

I too thought John has some good seeds this is what i have so far.

995.5 Vincent produced 1132 +10.5% '08
1028 Johnson produced 1177 +15% '08
633 Blalock produced 1129.5 '07
895 Hester

Good start so far on the squash side, do you think that I should try to get more genetics or just use what I have? I want to be able to have diffrent lines so that there is more potential, like what we have with pumpkins. I also dont want to dilute the good genetics too much. Just dont know what to do.

Thanks
Logan

I do like the pre existing hybrids gives me a way to put in more good pumpkin genes.

1119 razo(1367 X 848)This one I really like.
1053 werner (848 X 898) This is a good one also.

one with the 1450 would be good, and i would like to look at some more crosses that other people have done if they will please post them.

Might try to use the squash i have and create a few new ones using
1041 Mckie
1500 Revier
1209 Kuhn
664 Liggett

Just some thoughts,

Logan

I grew my 661 last year. I crossed the 848 with the 535 Wolf (from 815 Andersen) which goes green consistetnly and has NO 900 in it.

Going to cross it this year with the 834 or the 792.

Have some if interested, if not, no worries.

Ron, that 469 Hester also went 33% heavy, was a sought after seed back in the day. Fruit was solid except for a small cavity near the stem end.
