It seems there are at least a few growers on BP.com looking to make crosses that will result in seeds that will have the potential to grow big orange pumpkins.
The largest real orange pumpkins seem to have hit an upper limit of around 1300 lbs. so far. I'm wondering what breeding strategies might result in seeds that will have a chance at challenging the WR and have a good shot at nice orange color as well? If this is possible
I'd like to hear what some of you might have planned in regards to breeding for big and orange, or your opinions on this.
Also feel free to mention seeds that might be useful in the breeding of big and orange.
I think crossing a seed that has great size genetics and has a decent chance of producing nice color(such as the 904 Stelts, 1348 Hester, 1370 Rose, etc) with a seed known for producing great color might be a good route to take.

We will be growing our 993.3 Vincent McGill 08 ( 772 Poirier x 998 Pukos) and crossing it with the 1370 Rose.

Trying some orange crosses from growers who mentioned thick walls in their fruit(up to 14inches)....trying a couple of orange crosses with an orange 1180 Daletas as the pollinator and the fruit never reached its potential due to early fair picking or rodent damage...using % heavy more often....

I would bet on a 998 Pukos X color cross

We have a cross that is similiar to the one Steve mentions, also. It is the 860 H.Brunst 07. The 860 is 741 H.Brunst 06 X 998 Pukos. The 741 is 1370 Rose X 1420 LaRue. The 741 has grown us and friends some of the orangest pumpkins we have seen. The 860 was one of them. The 860 won the Howard Dill award at Pumpkinville, NY in 2007. Growing the 993.3 Vincent and crossing these is now a short list thought we have to continue the orange genes. Hopefully this helps explain the thought process for orange here in our patch. If the BP community would like, we could make a photo galery of these that may help to show this orange line?

Doug, my own 672 seed grew one taping 1200 on Sept first this year. Had it not gone down to rot at 15# / day it would have probably finished taping in the 1450 range.

It seems to grow longer barrel shapes and real nice 1231 Pukos orange.

I think its a two year process of finding an orange pumpkin such as the 4 below, and then crossing more big/orange into them the next year. I think the key to big is the pollinator. unfortunately, no guarentee to color, but eventually some one will hit it right.

996 Dwelly (772 Poirier x 1566 Rodonis)
250 Perham (772 Poirier x 1385 Jutras)
993 Vincent/McGill (772 Poirier x 998 Pukos)
1004 Mohr (772 Poirier x 1317.5 Rose)

I think the (772 Poirier x 904 Stelts) could be an awesome one too. Not sure if anyone's done that yet.

I think the 1068 or 1450 genes in there is a must to compete for the WR, and I like the 772 for color, especially in that it has grown close to 1300.

Pete - if you don't do the 772 x 904, I might.

also considering 992 V/M x 772.

I still like Julie's 801, maybe one of these times i'll give it a shot.

I'm going to do a 1689 X 670 and a few others. IMO and in my experience if you cross a light orange pumpkin (1689) with a very dark/red pumpkin the result is usually a medium to dark orange pumpkin.

Doug,

It appears that some of our fellow "orange" growers have some excellent ideas. I think a good breeding strategy is to have something heavy like the 1370 Rose or the 998 Pukos in it.

Seeds that have interested me for the 2009 season are:
904 Northrup
993.2 Vincent-McGill
Anything with the 772.2 Poirier in it (many listed above)
1317.5 Rose (1370 X 998)
1193 Rose (1370 X 1068)
1102 Pukos

Other 1370 X 998 crosses to consider are the 1207 Young and the 904 Stelts. Mark Breznick grew a 1392 pound orange pumpkin off of the 904.

Like Mike, I am also looking at thick walls as well as shape.

I look forward to a big-n-orange pumpkin beating a big-n-ugly pumpkin at a weigh off. Perhaps it will be from one of the crosses in this post.

The best seeds for color, IMHO, are:
810 Dill
920 Cole
670 Daigle
846 Calai
869.5 Calai
If you follow the genetics backward, you'll lots of common ancestry.

A lot of good suggestions.
Thanks for the pics Chip. The 741 was a beautiful orange....maybe the darkest orange 1370 Rose progeny? The offspring of the 741 are beauties as well. There could be some real orange monster-size potential from the 741. Definitely one to consider in breeding for big and orange.
Thanks for all the replies so far.

(mother of the 1225 Jutras, being used as a male polinator of the 1483.5)

One could even do 1385 Jutras x 1016 Daletas as well.
