I am new to this so I have a question about seed. When I got my seed from Howard dill's Co. it did not have a pedigree. I got 7 seeds from a 500-700 lb pumpkin and 4 seeds from a 1000 lb pumpkin. Now when I plant these do I try and cross them and create my own pedigree or what? Or would it be better to get some more seed with known pedigrees? I would love all the help I can get. I am old retired sailor that just loves growing things.

Hey Dennis,

I have also grown AGs with seed from the Dill farm. They were head and shoulders above the Wal-Mart seeds previously grown.

However, the growers on these forums have spent the past few years putting sweat and blood into the AG genetics - something which a commercial farm would have trouble aligning with the bottom line.

I would suggest you bake and eat those seeds and wait for someone on here to offer you seeds...which will probably be the next reply! Good luck and welcome to the community :)

Dennis, I have some seeds from the Dills with pedigrees that I would share with you. As well as some from my own. Please send an email.
Cheers, Brent

Dennis - I grew one of those pedigreeless Dill farm seeds last year in my first year. Mine came from the 300-500 pound Dill Farm bin and it was one of my biggest mistakes last year. Don't get me wrong, I wasn't sold anything more or less than I thought I was getting. The seed turned out to be a descent seed and it grew a very nice looking 755 pound pumpking that took 2nd place for pretties pumpkin but I worked really hard last year and I wish I had better genetics to award my effort. Dozens of growers including myself would be happy to give you a seed that has the potential to produce a big one. A good place to research pumpkin gentics can be found at www.pumpkinlink.com.

i also bought seeds from the dill in '07 and '08. last year i got my biggest ever. it was 388lb. i think the dills seeds have alot of good potential but i didn't know how to take grow them correctly.this is the best place on earth to learn how to grow giant ags. the best place to start is with don langevins books and dt-2book. they are a good starting point.

Thanks everybody. I got all thew books and info I could to study this winter. I tried with store bought seeds last not knowing anything about growing AG's. I learned a lot from that experiance. I learned that the vines a whole lot faster than I thought and if you don't have enough space and you plant them right with your pumpkins you soon can't determine what vines go where. So i gave up and just let them grow and grow. Now after reading all about them I think I'll have a better chance. I will keep you all posted on my progress this year Thanks again.

Dennis F. If you go to seed exchange board, and go past first page, you will find many offers for seeds, for the price of a SASBE...way better free stuff than you can get at Lowe's...or the uncontrolled crosses available!! Hope this helps you in your quest for top notch seeds!! If you still need a couple Killers...I will send you a couple of goodies....email wsmpeace@aol.com Peace, Wayne

Dennis, I suggest a growers seed over store bought, but.... not all store bought seeds are bad, i.e. Mackenzie Ruff's 1079 pound Anamosa entry was from a packet of seed off the shelf. A good looking pumpkin that had no pedigree grown by a little girl :)
You just never know.
