I'm not looking to buy seeds. I'm not looking for opinions of what is the best seed out there. I'm looking for growers who believe they have a good seed, a cross they've made, they're own seed(read: not somebody elses seed).

1) What is your best seed?

2) What is the cross?

3) Why is this seeds your best seed?

4) Convince me why I should plant this seed.

5) Are you planting this seed this season?

Kevin,an original idea! Could be interesting...
1.Although waiting to be grown, probably only ever by me lol,the 264Strange08.
2. 588Young x 660Dill
3.I'd be guessing at this point...also don't have many personal crosses. My 563 might be the other best seed.
4.The 264 was grown on 120 sq ft,perfect shape,dark orange,2%heavy.The 588 has produced the 1009 Young,dark orange,the 695 Young,29% heavy.The pollinator plant produced my 563,dark orange,8.7% heavy.
You seem to like orange and grow fruit much bigger than mine.
5. Yes,in one of my best plots.Seed seems to want to go,many had already germinated to two inch sprouts inside the fruit.

LongmontPete

Colorado

seed: 1004 Mohr

cross: 772 Poirier x 1317 Rose

why: grew over 1000 pounds in LESS than 300 sq. feet with a LATE (July 24) pollination date, in COLORADO, and she was still growing when I picked it. Pollinator is (1370 Rose x 998). Good genetics and great color, could grow some giant orange ones, if you like orange. and yes, its on my short list to grow.

Kelly Klinker

Woodburn, Indiana

1) What is your best seed?
863.5 Klinker 2008

2) What is the cross?
1248 Ford x 1159 Richards

3) Why is this seed your best seed?
Personal Best, 17% heavy and stopped growing in late August due to me not spraying for soil disease (new patch didn't think I needed to use it).

4) Convince me why I should plant this seed.
I think there is alot of potential in this seed. With the 1159 as the pollinator I believe it will bring in some great color, but won't kill the % heavy genes.

5) Are you planting this seed this season?
Yes, the only way to prove a seed is to grow it yourself.

Eddy Z, you've made alot of good looking crosses over the years. What is your best seed?

783 Wolf 08

(1445 Marsh x 1407 Wolf)

Heaviest solid pumpkin that I had last year where the pollinating plant grew a solid pumpkin. Both heavy to the chart as an extra.

The 1445 Marsh was (1407 x 695 Handy), I like crossing back to the mothers side. Flawless inside.

Yes, as a backup. May or may not make the main lineup.

1114 Pugh '08 (1041 McKie x 1385 Jutras)

The combination of two of the hottest seeds on the planet from a fruit that went 9% heavy.

I'm planting it this year and am hoping for a new personal best from it.

TruckTech1471

South Bloomfield, Ohio

1) 840.2 Gerchy or 976.5 Gerchy

2) 985 Werner x 1524.5 Liggett and reverse

3) Both went heavy, but I never achieved their full potential due to my own mistakes. Both mains were monsters and plants were trouble-free.

4) Finally got a good dose of the 898 into the 664.5. The 985 was more like its daddy than its mother. The 985 sapped very heavily throughout its growth cycle, with a circle of brown drippings surrounding the pumpkin. Do not over-feed this one.

5) Growing them both and can't wait to see what I've created

My best seed, I have high hopes for the 882 Zaychkowsky
Cross is the 705 Stelts X 898 Knauss
Why is it the best, It's a unique cross, bringing the old school 705 Stelts, The seed that grew 2,246 pounds in 2 fruit on the same plant back when 1000 pounds was huge.
and crossed it with the best heavy pollinator ever.
Convince you, OK, you want a PB and what should be a great looking fruit.
You bet I'm growing it.

Ron Rahe (uncron1@hotmail.com)

Cincinnati,OH

213 Rahe 08 est.
793 VanHook 07 x 1180.5 Pukos 07
The cross combines the mother seeds of the top 4 pumpkins of 2007
Loads of potential."You want to grow it" Jedi mind trick Haha..
Will use as a backup seed in 09 because parents are unproven and a 213 lb pumpin is really boring LoL.

1) What is your best seed?
846 Beachy 2008

2) What is the cross?
#50 Beachy x 1468 Richards

3) Why is this seeds your best seed?
The 846 is 3 generations in a row tops in the patch. The #50 was my #1 x #2 pumpkin crossed together out of 220 plants in 2006. Yes the weights were not 1400 pounds, but I am looking for raw ability in my tests. The #50 was grown from my 643.5 that still stands for my field grown record. If you know anything about statistics, the standard deviation of the #50 was 3.50 making it literally a 1 in 5000 seed. For the superiority to show up 3 generations in a row planted next to many of the top seeds in the world I thing gives the research merit.

4) Convince me why I should plant this seed.
The 846 is similar to and is more refined than a cross like the 1385 Jutras. If you saw the conditions in which the 846 was grown, you would expect to see 300-400 pound pumpkins. I got married, moved away, and was gone for most of July and August. Thus the plants were poorly trained, weeds controlled by entire plant roundup(bad idea dont try this lol), 5.6 soil pH, poor fertilizer program etc. Really given a very half arsed shot at growing.

All of this makes this a seed that does have sound 1400+ in the background, 3 generations in a row beating top ranked seeds side by side, and weighing in over 20% heavy makes this an easy pick for me as my best seed ever.

5) Are you planting this seed this season?
At least 2

At least 2 in competition I should say

Dummer Twp - Ontario

My best seed is the 1066 Chenier
1093 Hunt x 1502 Wallace - Both have a high percentage of going heavy and the Genes match up well for further crossing this year with the 1156 Hunt or the 993.5 Vincent/McGill

lots of 1068 in that cross.

1116 Traylor 08
1130 Jutras x 1385 Jutras
(1354x998)x (1068x998)
World record pollen here on both sides.
1116 grown in subpar conditions, PH of 5.9 and sandier soil, the 1385 was a fast growing specimen that split after a big rain, 1116 was 7%heavy and flawless in side combined with a fast growing beast. Reverse cross of 1502 wallace with the 998 on both sides...Could be a good one!

2 to choose from, both proven with only 3 plantings total:

1105.5 Bowles '07(1407 Wolf X 1139 Sherwood),grew my 1250 that went 5.5%+ on a plant that was covered with PM the 1st of Sept. Same cross the 1412McKie grew the 675 LaRue that went 25.3%+
this seed will be my backup on all plants this year

958.5 Bowles '07 (1248 Ford X 1407 Wolf), grew the 1218 Martin, 1st year grower and a second fruit that went 1100uow and 15%+ (illness in the family canceled weigh off plans for the grower)

this seed will be in my patch this year (along with a few others in WI and world wide)

Please dont think i am a bad grower..
My plants get hurt every year by hard winds
and any hailstorms.. so the leaves often get damaged.

The future of bigger, nicely shaped, orange pumpkins depends on orange fruit with thick walls.

577 Simpson est. 851 Davies (1260 Weir x 1016 Daletas) x 846 Jutras (604 Jutras x 1016 Daletas) The 846 plant produced the 794 Simpson dmg which had nice shape and color. The 851 was one of the most orange 1260’s grown. The fruit from the 1016 pollenator for the 851 was a very pretty 955 Davies. The 1016 Pollenator for the 846 Jutras grew the awesome 1225 Jutras. The 604 Jutras was a very pretty pumpkin. Lot’s of 801.5 Stelts in the 577. The 577 was very solid and had thick walls. I did not weigh it. The plant that grew the 851 was the pollinator for the 897 Davies (845 Bobier x 1260 Weir) which produced the 1248 Ford. The 1248 Ford and the 897 Davies rank #’s 4 and 5 for highest weight variance for the top ten fruit in the AGGC. I like this cross. It has never been planted. Steve Davies made the same cross with pollen from my 846 Jutras plant. 760 Davies, nice shape, orange and heavy. Pretty sure it has not been planted either.

I will be planting my 1252 Marsh 08(639Pugh x 511 Zaychkowsky) 639=500 Wallace x 1068 Wallace and the 511=1260 Weir x 1068 Wallace. The 639 and its pollinator(511) were both flawless plants. Both went heavy and both had shallow to almost no ribs. Both plants were healthy and I thought they both performed well even after having a bad year. Should be a heavy dependable grower!

901 Hunt/07 - 19% heavy (1093 Hunt x 898 Knauss). The 1093 is 1068 Wallace x 842 Eaton.

Last year we lost the 901 after several days of heavy rain. It was cut up on Aug 31st & estimated at 1269#. It had the potential to get over 1600#, even though the weather conditions were the worst we've seen in many years. It had the biggest leaves, thickest vines & was the most aggresive plant that we've ever grown or seen.

Jane will be planting it again this year.

We crossed the 1631.5 Mckie (20% heavy) into it last year. Having both parents over 19% heavy to the chart should keep the resulting seeds producing heavy pumpkins. Jane will also be planting the 1269 Hunt.

I learned a lot from these posts. Does anyone have any of the 1004 Mohr? I like what Pete says about it growing big in a <300 sq feet plot because that's my situation too.
