just curious pumpkin freaks.

earlier this year i spoke of strength in numbers when discussing multiple planting of the same seed.i realize not everone can do this if there plot is not large enough but none the less its an interesting subject.

are any of you growers new, medium or ultra experienced planting more that one of the same seed? if so do you care to share this information?

my own personal experience this season will be to plant four of the same proven seed stock and see what happens.

multiple plantings of the same seed stock can also be effective should you be growing for size, color, genetic traits, or a combination of anyof the above

thanks

Pap, heard stories about someone from Ky, planting 8 or 12 maybe of the same Kentucky seed. Not sure if this is true...but if so...would be a real strong experiment to see if the "Pap...All in or nothing" theory works or not!!! My guess is that at "least" one of these will grow a "Slunger"!!! (I would place this grower somewhere between medium and ultra)!!! Wishing Ron, and yerself, a great Growing Season!!! Peace, Wayne

Hey Pap. Yes, I am planting 2) 1325 Starr's (227 Leland x Sib). I'm excited to see what 2 of the same seed stock can do in the exact same dirt, side-by-side. Should be a good test to see what they are capable of.

I did something very similar to this last year with Dan Orleck, rookie grower. He lives with in 6-7 miles from me. We built his patch from scratch, using basically the exact same amendments that I used. We each planted my 1066 (1112 Daletas x 1068 Wallace) with very similar results; his weighed 1097, mine 1090.

I am planting 2) 1385 this year. the two 1385's will see dirt in my greenhouse, I hope to make a 1385 sibb, would be a nice cross.

OK I understand almost everything people are saying about genetics and such but I don't quite understand sibed? Does that mean you cross with the same seed only it's another plant? Or am I still missing the point LOL

Dennis F. - Yes a sibed is a cross of the same seed from different plants. I will be crossing a 1450 Wallace (if it germinates) with a grower's 1450 Wallace that lives 3 miles away. The 1450 Wallace is a 1068 Wallace that was sibed.

This year six 1279.5 Barlow '08 (1566 x 1385)are planned (partially because they outgerminated others in tests)
and one other pair of a proven seed.
The multiple planting is planned to see what the seed tendency is and I'll be using a couple of different vine patterns I want to compare. I figure I can get fair comparisons within the same patch.

3 1156 Hunt and 3 1244 Burgess. Is there some information you would like to have at the end of the season?

I am doing two 1566's and two 1161's. So far each pair are the same, with the 1566 being the bigest.
