How i can not beaware of every female and when they are going to open in the patch is beyond me the amount of time I spend in it? Wewll it happened got back from the 4th of July parade and wandered out back to look at the plants a Bam there was a female open on one of the secondaries of the 1408.5 Daletas Now it's been overcast with partal sun and the winds been blow'in pretty hard i grabbed a few pollen laden males of the 1408 and placed some pollen in the female it's now a definately open pollination but will be interesting to see if it takes? Pollinated around 1:45PM.While placing pollen in her some of the nectar from below the male stamenfell into the lobes it's happened before during pollinating and i always worry it will cause a abort?

The female was probably already pollinated by the bees long before you got to it. They open early morning so they had plenty of time. You should be able to tell the evening before if it is going to open. The bloom will turn an orange or yellowish color. You can bet it will open the next morning. Males can be determined the same way.

we all get caught off guard sometimes. best to look really good each and every evening.. most times the flower thats going to open in the a.m. will be slightly open the night before. it will be swollen and some yellow from the inside of the pedal will be slightly showing,

dave sometimes females pop a day early no big deal because it is just a side vine. hopefully you get one on the main to take shortly. the growth curve will be better unless time is a concern which at this time may be.
