Why do cetain plants have vines that grow to the sky and others not?
is it humidity, soil, temp. or genetics?

Thanks,

Genetics is where it starts. The 723 Bobier demonstrated this trait as do some others.

Trying to lay some of these vines down in cool weather is a real challenge.

Too much water & Nitrogen worsens the situation.

Then there are the others like my 1142 van Kooten last year that was a ground hugger and the easiest plant to bury and maintain....go figure.

From what I know of a plant hormone called auxin..

The presence of auxin causes the plant cell wall to elongate and divide. The concentration of auxin decreases when exposed to light, and increases on the dark side of the plant. Therefore, one side of the plant initially grows more quickly than the other - causing it to curl.

Other than that, all I have is speculative.
