There have been many great pumpkins grown and I am always interested to see which seed the grower has the most confidence in.

So, here is your chance to tell other growers about one of your seeds. Let everyone know which seed of yours you like, the cross, and why.

This is your opportunity to showcase what you think is your best, and who knows, maybe someone will plant it next year.

OK Matt, I'll bite.

718.9 Gerchy 2008(1005 Mombert x 893 Privitera). I grew an 1197-pounder it's first year out(I'm the only one who has planted it)and it grew at alarming rate until it was starved for potassium. Very beautiful, classic-shaped pumpkin with no flaws and was trouble-free.

The 1005 was the mother of Dr. Bob's 664.5 and I decided to cross it with a different pollinator, Tom's 998.6 x 1068. Why not cross it with a cross of the mothers of two world records?

1197 Gerchy 2009(718.9 Gerchy x 1521.5 Werner). Not grown yet, but I think Quinn's 1521.5 will be a good pollinator.

976.5 Gerchy 2008(1524.5 Liggett x 985 Werner). One over 1100 and one over 1200 first year out.

1147 shenoha 2008 (1041 mckie x self) went 15.4% heavy

it grew the 873 Naylor 2009 (1147 x 1119) that went 24% heavy. disease took down 2/3s of "Meat57"s 1147 shenoha plant and it still threw out 873 lbs or rock flesh. both the 1147 and 873 are seeds to be considered and i will be growing my 1147 next year and only have room for 3 plants. a 991, 901, and 1147. i have that much faith in it. very massive aggressive plant in all aspects.

ps and that 873 naylor 2009 was pollinated by a plant that produced a 24% heavy pumpkin off the 1119 mcmullen. 24% heavy x 24% heavy. yikes. should make a great pollinator and throw massively heavy pumpkins.

I think I can come up with a pic Andy. E-mail me at:jgerchy@columbus.rr.com.

Jed, I weighed the 976.5 at 1128 pounds at Circleville...it taped at 923 pounds. Dr. Bob's weighed 1217 at Oakland Nurseries. It went 5.21% heavy.

1140 Stevens. 2 pumpkins this year 1325 and 1543. Both 5% heavy. Both very nice shape no deep ribs or big dill rings.

1160 Stevens. Grew 1375 first time out....with no stump.

1364 Hopkins. 9% heavy pollinated with 1140 that grew 1543.

I will be planting my 623 est McWilliams 09. It is 3/8 1068 Wallace, 1/4 1446 Eaton, and 1/8 each of 1097.5 Beachy, 1370 Rose and 998 Pukos. It was growing well beyond the 1200# benchmarks when the monsoons hit last summer. I have hopes that it got all the good genes of its ancestors.

Great Post Matt, I like these type posts, I hope alot of growers respond to it.

Joe G, you always have been a thinker and a planner over the years when it comes to cross's and this year it worked out great for you. That's impressive on how heavy your 718 went.

I'm going to try a seed of mine that hasnt been grown out yet, and since over the past few years the 1446 Eaton has been sticking out in alot of cross's that is being grown huge, Im going to try a 626 Bosworth'05 (1446 Eaton x 1260 Weir). The 1446 seems to still go huge when its in the back ground of a seed(mother or father), and the 1260 Weir was the leader back in the day of pumpkins that always seemed to go extremely heavy.

And if I cant find another 1161 to grow next year, Im going to give the 710 Bosworth 08' a try. ( 1231 Pukos x 1068 Wallace)
That 710 seed is about as close as Im going to get to the same genetics the 1161 Rodonis has in it (1231 Pukos x 1450 Wallace). Maybe the 710 can grow some similar type huge pumpkins that 1161 has.

1143 Wolf (1195 Neuville x 1041 Mckie) - Heaviest grown in western NY this year (West of Alan Nesbitt, LOL), and the pollinator plant grew Tim Bailey's 1116, which was the 2nd heaviest out here. Nice mix of shapes - mine was a wheel, his was a boat, and both were 11/12 percent over chart.

652 Wolf (sibbed 1041) - the 652 plant dealt with some bad weather, pollinator grew Tim's 1116. Only sib of the 1041.

664.5 Wolf 08 (801 Stelts x 865 Mettler) - almost hit 1000 pounds this year being grown by my wife and kid on a late pollination, I know it has a lot more potential, and we will be planting it next year. (see Timmy W diary)

Matt,

We know you already have your seeds picked out for your 10 prime spots. But I have only 3 spots to plant and I will try another 1116 Traylor which grew my 1449.5 this year! The pumpkin was only 84 days old and as you know over 1/2 of the plant was removed to slow her down. I know you don't want to grow it because you are concerned about shape and cracking but hey you have 10 spots what else you going to grow, something orange?

I also like my 1449.5. It has two years of different 1385 pollen in it! Could be a good one! All WR seeds are bred in it, 1354, 1068, 998, 1385 (with 998 WR pollen!)

Other potential seeds are the 989 and 878 Traylor which went 12.7 and 19% heavy respectivley. The 989 is 1385 x 1116 and the 878 is the 1353 debacco x 1116! Remember the 1116 went to 1449.5 and had a good shape and stem!

I'm planting 2 of my own crosses next year.

978.5 Coldwell '09 25% heavy
F.1354 Young (1207 X 998) X M.1130 Jutras (1354 Checkon X 998)

763 Coldwell '09 15% heavy
F.1026 Young (1385 X 1207) X M.1408.5 Daletas (1068 X 805 Pukos)

Both were late pollonations, 7-18.
Cut from vine on day 59 for early weigh-off.

562 Duncan (1041X664)+ 7% only cross of its kind, lost entire plant to PM between 1st and 2 week in Aug due to large ammounts of rain fall this year and no systemic fungacides. Nice orange color too.

I become these Seeds of myself plants in 2010:

845 Jager 09 (1,041.5 McKie x 1,521.5 Werner 08) 17.97% Heavy also Female and times were difficult. I think the genetics them here is united a lot of space leaves for big and heavy Pumpkins.

690 Jager 09* (1,055.5 Pitura 06* x 1310 Pitura 08*) I think this with these parents also much possibly is my 1310 Pitura has produced darkly green Females.
