I'm thinking about possibly growing a seed from this pumpkin next year:

Do you think the irregular indentations in this pumpkin are caused by genetics, and may be passed on to the progeny? The pumpkin on the pollinator plant had nice shape I think. Anyone plant seeds from an irregularly-shaped pumpkin like this, and if so, what were the results? I think the progeny of this pumpkin could have great color, it's the shape I'm a little worried about.

Here's a good example Doug, the 1068 Wallace. The 1068 was a birdbath shaped pumpkin, and that seed has produced alot(if not most) of pumpkins with a big blocky shape to them.

I dont think I have seen a 1068 seed produce the same shape as its mother was (bird bath).
Every pumpkin in the AGGC that I have seen(unless I'm overlooking one), none has produced that same ugly shape as what the 1068 mother was.

Hi Doug,
As you know it is always a crap shoot but let me show you an example of our 695 from 2008 which is shown here. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=95629

This was grown by 3 growers this year 2 were beautiful from this seed.
Jeremy Robinson grew his 882 which was 10% heavy and won the Howard dill award at his weigh off. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=121804

Our 695 was entered in the local fair in late August and was 648 pounds and 8% heavy. Here is a pick of that. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=123387

The 695 08 went 29% heavy which peaked my interest, but was afraid of the dill ring. I don't believ any of the progeny so far have had dill ring problems.

when in doubt? throw it out. no guarentees with shape and color unless the mother and father were both ideal. then? you can still pick up a flaw from generations past. but not likely

hi doug i got your email. the 492.5 gerhardt you are referring to did have a strange twist on the top. all of the other pumpkins that i culled had the same exact mark too. the 603.5 pollinator pumpkin was flawless except the plant got sick before the pumkin could get really big. i think due to herbicide contaminant. i grew 1 492.5 10ft mainvine only plant started mid june it produced a perfect red-orange 150lb pumpkin. -jim
