What do your prefer on your pumpkin? And do you select your seeds based on this?

you dont see many splits with a sucked in blossom and you got to like the look of anything with the 998 in it

I would think it is just the opposite, a sucked in blossom makes me worry....alot.

Neither a sucked in blossom end or snout, however I guess sometimes it just happens. Personally, I don't favor any genetics or lineage traits that show and produces it and yes, I'd base my seed selection and planting on it.

Same here Tom, I had a sucked in blossom end on my 1190 this year that worried me to death, not only was it sucked in about 12 inches it was also pointing to the sky(birdbath). Gravity has to play a part after a while with a blossom end like that, but lucky for me it was 'alot' thicker than I thought in that area.

I get excited when I see a pumpkin start forming a snout, thats what I want when growing a pumpkin,,,Id rather have a snout blossom end with every pumpkin I grow. A snouted blossom end seem to always be really thick in that area of the pumpkin. When ever I see a pumpkin with a big snout first thing I think of is HEAVY.

you would love them all to have the heavy gene, tapered blossom and big shoulders. unfortunately some of the heaviest pumpkins have a challange to deal with.
rons 1596 off the 1161 rodonis had a dimpled blossom but was never a problem and very thick in that area.
but yes, in a perfect world you would have prefered a full blossom.

I think the sucked in blossom ends are slightly more prone to split. The ones I have split have been like this.

We ought to track fruit that have decent thickness in the blossom end. That would be a trait to "select" when picking seeds to plant.

Looking at 998 Pukos and 1566 Rodonis, both of which appear to have sucked in blossoms, I do not see any DMG due to splits in offspring at the blossom end. There are many photos of offspring showing that the sucked in blossom trait went on but did not cause any troubles. Maybe with more research, could there be a relation between sucked in blossoms and those fruits also going light to the chart?
