These past few posts have got me thinking. What can recent WR-breaking pumpkins tell us about what we might want to plant if we want the next WR? To start, here’s the list of WR pumpkins with seed parent and grandparents (from AGGC.org and pumpkinlink.com):

1725 Harp 2009 (1385.5 Jutras 2007 = 1068.0 Wallace 2003 x 998.6 Pukos 2005)

1689 Jutras 2007 (998.6 Pukos 2005 = 1420.5 LaRue 2004 x 1446.0 Eaton 2004)

1502 Wallace 2006 (1068.0 Wallace 2003 = 845.0 Bobier 2000 x 898.0 Knauss 2001)

1469 Checkon 2005 (1354.0 Checkon 2004 = 723.0 Bobier 1999 x 986.0 Checkon 2002)

1,446 Eaton 2004 (842.0 Eaton 2002 = 846.0 Calai 1999 x 723.0 Bobier 1999)

1,385 Daletas 2003 (783.0 Daletas 2000 = 500.0 Hebb 1996 x 801.5 Stelts 1997)

1337.6 Houghton 2002 (845.0 Bobier 2000 = 935.0 Lloyd 1997 x 865.0 Mettler 1998)

1262 Emmons 2001 (940.0 Mombert 1998 = 567.5 Mombert 1992 x 801.5 Stelts 1997)

1140 Stelts 2000 (705.0 Stelts 1999 = 801.5 Stelts 1997 x 974.0 Mettler 1998)

These stats jump out at me:

Seed older than 3 years: 0/9

Seed from 3 years back: 3/9

Seed from 2 years back: 4/9

Seed from Previous year: 2/9

AND

Repeat WR from same parent: 0/9

Maybe these things don't mean anything and are an artifact of the sheer number seeds people choose to plant. However seeds from two years back seem to have the highest chance at a new WR. So that leads me to my question (finally):

Which 2008 seed has the best shot at a new WR next year (and why)?

940 Mombert 98 is 866 Mombert 96 X 567.5 Mombert 92 the cross you listed is the 940 Mombert 00.
In answer to your question though, I think the 1467 Perham 08 has the best shot because it did see dirt this year and proved itself be pretty productive and go heavier than the estimates. Based on that I expect a lot more of those seeds will be planted in the upcoming season. Then again, the next world record may be two or three years down the road and come from a pumpkin that hasn't been grown yet. It could also come from an older seed that some skilled and astute grower pulls from their collection based on their knowledge and what their gut tells them.

This list is by no means complete, but here are a few that have produced a sound pumpkin over 1200 lb, and I'm sure a few of them will be planted again by some heavy hitters. The seed they were grown from and their pollintors have all been successful.

1483.5 Werner 08 (1385.5 Jutras 07 x 1207 Young 07)
1568 Connolly 08 (1566 Rodonis 07 x 1689 Jutras 07)
1209 Kuhn 08 (1385.5 Jutras 07 x 1566 Rodonis 07)
1343.5 Lyons 08 (1385.5 Jutras 07 x 1470 Wallace 07)
1288 Wallace 08 (1385.5 Jutras 07 x 1207 Young 07)
1309 Hebb 08 (1068 Wallace 03 x 998.6 Pukos 05)
1521.5 Werner 08 (1161 Rodonis 07 x 1308.5 McKie 06)
1156 Hunt 08 (1631.5 McKie 07 x 1689 Jutras 07)

My guess is 1385.5 Jutras 2007, because it has the stuff and it will be well-represented in heavy hitters' patches.

I think you are right in that the numbers can be skewed due to everyone planting a new seed once it proves out.

I like the 1288 Wallace ,even if doesnt grow the next world record, I like the idea of the genetics from that seed being in the back ground of our future generation of pumpkins. Just my thinking from what I have seen on the 1288.

Don't count the 1161 Rodonis out from growing the next world record ether, lots of big ones grown from that seed, and has came fairly close itself from breaking records. It definitely holds its own with the top seeds out there and I think it has huge potential of growing a world record..

I did a genetics cross this year, that looks like the only cross made this year, but I call it the Rodonis Genetics cross seed. Its a 1566 x 1161 cross I did this year that I think could be fantastic. I my self have never grown a genetics cross before, but that seed might just have the potential if its put in the right HH's patch . Out of all the cross's I have done over the years that one there is one of my favorites.
(sorry for getting off the subject there some,,lol)

I always liked the 1568, the beast from the east! It went light and DMG but was a consistant grower. I say that crossed with a heavy is what will get 2000lbs. But still a lot of other good prospects out there! But I would love the grow that seed!
