1293 -(904(f) x 1290(m)). David sent me this seed, thank you. On the bottom of the package it said "warning 1290 had deformed fruit". Would you be scared to plant it or use it as a pollinator? I wanted to cross it with a 1347 wallace (1068 x 1370) I think that it would be a huge orange cross. But I don't want to mess up my 1347. I also have a 1004 Mohr (thanks pete) that looks to be a great orange cross for the 1347.

I think it would be alright to use. I would need to know more about the deformity. Only way you will know is to grow it.

Alex is right. There are loads of things which can cause deformities; environment, disease, an extra chromosome. Planting it would be low risk since you can usually tell early on if a fruit will be misshapen.

Good luck.

Wouldn't depend what you are going for? If you want just to go for weight it shouldn't be a big deal. If you want to go for a uniform pumpkin then maybe look at going with other seeds? I received this seed as well and I am going to give it a try. It sounds like a great seed either way.

From the picture, it looks like a possible lobe pollination issue to me...no worries, BF

All I am really going for is 2000 lbs, round, and orange, with a 1000 seed count. Not asking for much.

Chad, don't normally look on here...so glad you told me....the 1290 I grew was about 200 lbs and looked just like this:
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=121810

This is also 1290 -> 1021.5 Faskell

Anyways, I'm not sure on the 1290 line after seeing one in my patch...the year before was a nice looking one.

So that is why I gave a warning. :-)

Dave, did that pumkin (the 200lbr) contain seeds?

Just curious, I know the 568 didn't.

I would not be afraid of the 1290 Poirier line! Lets not forget that the late great Howard Dill declared the 1290 Poirier the prettiest pumpkin ever grown!! I grew it to 1021.5 my rookie year!!

Dave, when I grew a 1068 Papez in 2008, I saw photos from some other growers that had wierd lumpy pumpkins like that from the same seed. Mine grew normally to 841. I gave some seed from it to another grower who let several pumpkins grow on it. Most were normal but one was lumpy just like that. There may be something genetic that doesn't show up on every pumpkin. Or maybe it is just a disease or fungus or bug something that affected the fruit.

You sent me one of your 1293 seeds and if it doesn't go in the patch in 2010, it will in 2011. I'm not afraid of it at all. Double vines bother me a whole lot more.

Hi Dan,
I gave the pumpkin away and never went after the seeds...so I don't know..Sorry.
BTW:
Let me know if you want some of the 1355 Bhaskaran 09 (same cross as 1568 Connolly)...you had mentioned to save some for WGPG...I think I saved off 25 for you.
Have a great holiday season!
Dave
