If you set these two field pumpkins side by side how do you tell the difference between the two?,, I cant see any difference at all,,lol. Stem looks the same, shape, ribs, size,,,

There is alot of field pumpkins out there with different names that I cant tell the difference between unless told what they are, what is the main thing you look at to distinguish between these field pumpkins that have a different name but look the same?

Thanks for the pics German, but I dont think Im explaining my self very good.....

But if the names wasn't below the pumpkins on the two pics you posted , would you really be able to tell them apart and say this pumpkin is a Phat Albert and this one is a Phat Jack?

Say if you was going to a pumpkin stand and there wasnt any names on the pumpkins you was going to buy, would you be able to tell them apart 100%?

Cause even though in the picture the names are listed below the pumpkin they still look exactly the same to me, no difference at all between the two.

What characteristics pin point the difference between the two, cause I dont see any,,lol

Is it the Color between the Phat Albert's and Phat Jacks?,, they look the same to me,

size,, they both look the same.

ribbing, they both look the same.

stem,, they both look the same.

What is it that you are seeing that Im not to be able to tell them apart?LOL

OK...I'll jump in! Last year I was determined to buy both Phat Albert & Phat Jack seeds. Phat Jack was no problem, but I checked every seed company I could find...and no Phat Albert. If anyone has purchased seeds labeled Phat Albert, I sure would like to know! I bought "Olga" from Outstanding Seed Co. & was told they were actually Phat Alberts. I also bought "95 Bell" from OVGPG and understood that they were from Phat Albert. BUT...no one could tell me where they got the Phat Albert seeds! I've wondered if someone grew a Phat Jack and just decided to call it Phat Albert. SOOOO BROOKS....my supposed Phat Alberts have been more oblong and my Phat Jacks have been more round. But don't take that to the bank....another grower told me his Phat Alberts were round!!! So, just for fun, I named my Phat Jack seeds "Phat Nana"!!!!!!!
THE END.

I think Nana is right. I really think it's just what someone nicknamed a single type of pumpkin. For example in the fish hobby, a single type of fish can have several different nicknames depending on where they are purchased. Serious fish hobbyists rely on the scientific name for the species. Look at the way people refer to a carbonated beverage. The East coast refers to it as Soda but in the midwest, it's Pop.

For the sake of argument, let's all just use a sharpie.

Thanks Tim, Glenna, that makes alot more sense, the fat ones verses the longer ones or just different names but same pumpkin.

At the Ohio weigh off one year,Nic Welty was really good at telling all the small varieties apart, he could just look at a pumpkin and know what kind it is, hes very good at distinguishing between the two, but how he does it is beyond me,lol,, I guess if you grow enough of the different types year after year it might not be so hard to tell them apart.

Hi Brooks.
I think so you can find both kinds and shop.
Plant both! And you can recognise the differences in 2010.
I wish you a lot of luck!
Best greetings,Janni
