What do you guys think the best seed to cross with the 1725 Harp is?

Since you're asking, I would self it at least one more time and then choose a worthy pollinator. Or you could go with 901 Hunt.

hard to ignore the 1677.5 Hunt,,,a lot of 1600# genetics there

We'll likely cross Christy's 1725, with our 1678. These seeds are screaming to be crossed. 1385 x 901 will be in the works as well. Phil

Selfed seeds could be selfed one more time and the winners from that crop should be grown. In theory the 1st generation from a selfed seed has a random assortment of offspring based on the parents of the selfed seeds. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong as this is just the way it was explained to me. No matter what happens, growers will have fun with this seed!

I think your right Don, but I was never a big fan of selfed seeds. Selfing the seed again should help stabilize the cross, but we're looking for some extra vigor in our crosses, so we like to bring something new into them every other time it's crossed. This is something an old cattle farmer told me once, so we thought we'd try it with our seed line.

I like crossing it with dave stelts 1421.5.I think crossing the 1370 genes(904 stelts) into the 1725 could make a excellant seed.

Hmmmm... when you put it that way Phil I have to agree with you. Why stabilize old genetics when we are looking for something new that will go bigger. While I stabilize it someone will have made the killer cross. Hopefully there will be many different crosses made with the 1725. That should shake up the gene pool because the 1385 was selfed. We need that from time to time.

It seems to me that the 1725 being a selfed 1385 is a good thing. Hopefully the plant vigor and the amazing pumpkin growth characteristics are somewhat stablized and will be passed on to it's progeny. The 1725 is the heaviest pumpkin ever grown. Selfing/sibbing it again could be a good breeding objective.

Phil were you saying that it should be crossed with the most vigorous plant in your patch at pollination time? Or from a seed that produced your most vigorous plant last year? Or from a seed from the pumpkin of your most vigorous plant. Or would cross it with a great seed like your 1678 or any of the 16xx.

depends on your stategy. if you want to maybe produce a pumpkin with posssibly the same genetic characteritics as the original 1385 that grew the 1725, then self the 1725. you might get a whole new crop of 400 seeds that have the genetic possibilty to grow very large world record setting pumpkins.

if you do say a 1725 x 901 and the 901 plant you grow produces huge and heavy similar to the results of the 1678, then that can be one sick big n heavy possibility cross.

i am hoping to make 2 big-n-heavy x big-n-heavy crosses in 2010 with a 901 x 991 both ways and then cross the mammoth size 1725 gentics into those crosses in 2011.

picking a strategy might make it easier on selecting your chosen pollinater

Hey Bill

If it were me & we are likely growing this seed, I'd look for a good seed that goes heavy & has a different genetic background than the 1725 & cross them. If we can't find a seed that fits that bill, then we look for the best seed we can find that went real heavy or one that consistantly grows fruit heavy to the charts. Like I said ealier in this thread, we'll grow the 1725 & cross it with our 1678.

I like the 1678 because of it's size, % heavy & genetic background. The pollinator was our 1156 (1631 Mckie-20% heavy x 1689 Jutras-previous WR). We'll have the previous top two 1600#+ pumpkins crossed together & then crossed into a seed that grew the 3rd largest pumpin of all time, that went 19%+ heavy to boot. This should prove to be a good cross in the future.

I think a cross with the 1236 Harp (the pollinator was the 1725) would make sense. It would hopefully keep those good genetics in place.

Wayne has a point, crossing smaller seeds, such as the 275 Van Hook, into large seeds like the 1725, has shown to be a very successful genetic breeding method.

Well, I would suggest selfing a number of the 1725, so that its genes can be even more consistent.

I would however like to see a seed from a selfed 1370 Rose, one that was very round and nice Orange used to pollinate a 1725.

1370's mixed with 1068 have already shown to be really strong for getting shape and color. 904 stelts is a geat example of that, we all know what that one did. 1028 Gienger was a 1110 Wallace, which was 1370 x 1068 as well.

Now the 1725 already is 50% 1068 Wallace, and has 998 Pukos there already as well.

So a 1370 that has been selfed for a couple generations would be my suggestion to add to the 1725.

Or maybe even later down the line with another selfing of the 1385 genes from the 1725.
