just curious on opinions out there when thinking about making future crosses. which will give you a better chance at carrying on the desired trait in your future cross, is it the seed that grew the pumpkin or the seed from the pumpkin?

example:
will growing a 1385 give you a better chance for the monster genetics carrying into your cross, or the 1725 seed that already has the trait as proven in the pumpkin itself?

same as do you grow the 901 or the 1678 hunt if you are trying to carry on the big and very heavy genetics into your future cross?

how about is it the 1467 perham or the 1355 kilburn if you are looking for extreme heavy genetics in your future cross?

this also goes for the pollinators.
which do you choose to be the pollinator, the mother or the daughter?

A breeder's objective is as you know to cross two individuals with the desired traits. The problem you are dealing with is the same one all pumpkin growers face. Basically you are crossing blind, and are relying on chance that the parents have the genetic goods you want. IMO because the 1725 has been selfed it is a much more desirable parent than some random 1385 sibling. But that's a special case.

i hear ya brian...the cloners have taken a lot of the guess work out of it. it will be very interesting to see how that plays out over this next decade.

i think many great crosses are made because many of the top notched growers have 6 or so proven seeds that will all have a chance to throw monsters. crossing any of them works great.

i believe the probabilites are higher if a proven seed x proven seed with the better averages of the trait you desire are crossed. but i also agree, with special pumpkins, like the 1725 or the 1678 or the 1355, their individual qualities might have a better chance to be transferred from the daughter and not the mother. and the selfing of the 1725 has to also increase the odds of it carrying that same enormous size genes and extreme plant vigor genes within it in my opinion.

shazz,I like the 1725 as a pollinator into anything thats not all 1385 jutras. I'm going to use the 1725 to pollinate 901 hunt,991 urena,1421.5 stelts.I like the 1385 to go big that generation.I guess I like the mother

Yup we are on the same page, Shazzy. It will be interesting to see what the cloning approach does.

Both, in my opinion, As in the 1306 Jutras. 1450 Wallace was a sibbed, Not selfed, but still worthy.and crossed with the 1068.
I would grow the 1725, cross it back to the mother(1385), then in the following year, I'd go with the offspring of that cross, and cross it with the 1306 jutras,
If you queery that on the AGGC, it really is scary, and therefore you need both Mother and daughter.

i hear that eddy. as i looked the other day at this post, i thought the same thing. with that being said, just cross the above mother and daughters for the best chance of the offspring acquiring and displaying the desired trait. then use that cross into what ever seed you are looking to add the trait to.

what about using pollen from the 1385 plant that grew the 1725 to pollinate a new 1385 and reverse? it might happen in my neck of the woods. or maybe grow the 1725 and pollinate with pollen from the 1385 clone that grew the 1725.self x self

May as well chime in, a possible cross for the 1725 could be 1258 Wallace ( 1450 Wallace x 1385 Jutras )Similar to what Eddy has in mind.

STEVE realy a good idea i think the best is the 2 option!, if we can freely have access to clone of the 1385 or other beast like it i think we can have a terible jump of pumpkins size in next years
somebody think is possible to send a similar clone to europe?

Hence the value in the subscriber only aspect of AGGC. The query builder finds this stuff with ease.

Steve Z, I really like all those ideas, especially the 1725 x clone.

Hopefully the clone plant makes it to spring and will have a few vines to seperate. I hope one makes it to my area. The last time I talked to Nic the plant was doing well. I beleive he still has the 1288 wallace clone that grew Don's big one also.
