For the last 4 - 5 years top growers have talked about genetics needing to provide a 1500 lb plus fruit that goes heavy to the chart. This year it seems like the 1500 lb plus fruit generally went at or heavy to the chart. Could this be year that provides seeds that grow fruit that tape 1800 and go 2000 lbs? Mark

The genetics are already there, it will be the cutting edge grower who takes it to the next level. The 901 Hunt is the product of seeds from 01, 02 and 03 ( 842 Eaton, 1068 Wallace and 898 Knauss). The 1725 Harp came from seeds from 03 and 05.
1689 Jutras- seeds from 05 and 03, 1662 Stelts from two 03 seeds. The right combination of weather, genetics and dedication and luck will produce the next WR.

I got a hunch that the 1288 Wallace will help us take us to that next level, ether the seed itself or that seed crossed into one of the 09 seeds of last year. I think your going to see this seed in alot of cross's coming up in the next few years just like you seen the 1068.

I also like the 991 Urena in the same way.

1596 Wallace (1161 Rodonis X 1068 Wallace)
This'll be the seed to grow the next beast.
Its' probably got the greatest cross of 2009.

-It went heavy to the chart.
-The fruit itself was a monster.
-And it has the greatest to produces as parents.

Could be the seed...

If the 1725 Harp captures the favorable traits of the mother/father plant....look out! I'm guessing some of those seeds could be special.
I think crossing the 1725 into a seed known to produce well-shaped, thick walled pumpkins could be a nice strategy.

I personally feel there are many seeds that are capable of growing an WR in the right hands, 1258 Wallace maybe? It would be interesting to know who is growing what this year.

2009 was definetly an interesting year for genetics but I believe 2010 will be the year that we will look back on. If some of these clone crosses pan out we could have a whole new group of genetics. The odds of getting a cross like what happened with the 1385 Jutras are probably 1 in 2000 where you end up crossing two top genetic plants together. With the clones you at least know that half of the cross is going to be a good one (at least good on paper). You probably bring the odds of getting a great cross down to something like 1 in 100 with the use of clones which eventually means a much better genetic pool.
