This topic has been discussed before, but does anyone have any input on a self seed that has been grown more then say 3 or 4 times that has grown some big pumpkins consistently?
I think there hasnt been really that many selfed seeds out there grown to really even say for sure? One reason I think a selfed seeds hasnt been given much of a chance and grown is because if the real seed was still around why grow a selfed one?
Then once the real deal seeds has run out and lost its spark, its already time to grow a different but better proven seed, so the selfed seed is just left in the seed box. IMO

I do think we are going to find out this answer this year though, and probably get a real good idea on how consistent and big a self seed grows off the 1725 Harp seed.

Its going to be interesting to see how well this 1725 seed does from it being grown so many times all over the world this year.
Id say there is a good chance that the 1725 seed will be the most grown selfed seed out there ever, after this year, what do you guys think?

After the 1725 grows a top 5 average over 1700 pounds I think it will be a very good auction seed!
Proven seeds pollinated by the 1725 will be in high demand!
Selfed seeds will no longer be taboo but very few, if any, selfed seeds will be as successful.
That's what I think..... John

I think your right John, what makes that seed so in demand to grow and is already popular at actions is obvious, its the biggest pumpkin ever grown, plus was grown off a very popular proven seed that has grown other monster pumpkins besides the 1725.

I dont think the 1725 seed would be grown as much this year if it was pollinated by another plant , say a half proven seed for example that only grew a couple 1300 lbers.(if that makes sense).

But I think by her selfing that seed is what will get it grown the most espically the first year out, more then any world record seed ever planted I would think. But thats just my opinion though but will find out for sure come October.

The 603.5 Muller 03(845 Nesbitt X self) has been grown quite a few times. It's one of the most consistant orange producers IMO.
Traits that seem be passed on to it's offspring quite consistantly are, the nice orange color and going heavy to the chart. The actual 603.5 was 8.64% heavy. It's progeny frequently go around 10% heavy. Of course individual seeds vary.
Could this example prove promising for the 1725? Will the plant and fruit characteristics be passed on to its offspring? We should know a lot more next fall.

Also, the 735 Pukos(846 Calai X self) did quite well in it's day. The color did vary quite a bit with it's offspring I've noticed.

Brooks I think that you are right in that they just don't look as good because they aren't planted enough by the right people. I've talked about the advantages of selfing in breeding programs before and basically been ignored or disrespected by people who apparently know much more than me about genetics and plant molecular biology. Thanks to Christy selfing her WR 1725 lb pumpkin this single seed might be grown more, but I doubt attitudes will change much. (mine hasn't lol). To reiterate what I've said before, selfing is a good way to capture and purify desired genetic traits in parental lines.

IMHO the best possible plant is most likely to be a hybrid (cross). However, it has to be the RIGHT hybrid. A selfed seed from a proven winning parental plant is probably a better bet than an unproven cross.

490 Donkers
914 Weir
1432 C/P
735 Pukos
977 Anderson
916 Barenie
909 Lloyd

Are a few examples that come to mind. The number of selfed seeds planted in top patches compared to hybrids is far in favor of the hybrids.

All the 1725s are likely no good. If you have one please mail it to me to avoid planting it in your own patch.

Could someone check the offspring on these (what they prodused),, when mother (Selfed seed) is used and father is hybrid..

Lol, Nic! If you get too many to manage, holler. I got your back!

I'm back now Steve. lol.

The interesting thing to me is that the last time the WR was a selfed seed was the 1092 Burke. That certainly played an important role in future genetics as it was the mother of the 805 Pukos.

Also, as I said just the other day, the 735 pukos (846 x self) grew a 1224. The 846 itself never broke 1200. So, I see a possibility of the 1725 popping a 1700+ in the next few years.
