there are some fantastic crosses made each and every year.
i like to consider the entire genetic tree when selecting a crosse if its an unproven seed stock.
my 1450 x 1385 last year was smooth, quite orange, thumped like a cheap basketball but weighed 23% over the chart.so much for that friggin thump test.lol
im definately planting it next year.we also put one in every bubble we packed this past weekend.

Pap, I used the thump test last year on my first giant that measured 444lbs. I was afraid it was hollow, so I didn't take it to the local weigh-in, but when I opened it for Halloween, it was solid. Thanks for sharing.

Vermont Steve,

You may also want to check out the "BIG N' BEAUTIFUL" selection under premium seeds at howarddill.com.

In addition to the orange crosses from 2009, there are a few older seeds including one that Howard Dill grew, a couple of nice Northrup crosses and the 1290 Poirier.

Chuck, you took the words out of my mouth. For serious "orange" growers what is better that 892 H. Dill-670 Daigle x 1016 Daletas. Danny or Diana, please set a few aside, I'll be looking for some.

Chuck,
Thanks for the heads up. I'm just getting started crossing for orange, and I'm looking for growers' opinions to get seeds that produce ORANGE in the future.

Did you ever have to make up your mind? Orange or size?

The 593 Dill on the Dill site could be a good one.The mother seed 589 H.Dill cross is 670 Daigle x 846 Calai and produces thick walled ,dark orange fruit(615 Jaser for example). With the 1290 as pollinator, who knows...

Steve,

I like to plant for a big-orange pumpkin. However, I usually plant one or two for size to give fellow Santa Rosa growers Patchmaster & Vineman something to worry about during the growing seasson.

Shoot me an e-mail at veader@sonic.net. I have some information on orange crosses you might like.

Also, John Young lives near you in Vermont. He is a an experienced grower who knows quite a bit about orange crosses.

Farmer Chuck,
I'm growing two of John Young's orange beauties this year: his 695 and his 648. I'm asking him to hold my hand while I grow his crosses this year(lol). I'm also growing the Wallace 1596 and 1258 for size. Pap told me he'd reload me next year if I did. You should have my email by the time you read this. Thanks.

John and Mike...thanks for the mention....being a new grower it is kind of cool to see your seeds talked about in one of these posts. Both of those crosses were a result of Phil Hunt helping me out with choosing and supplying male flowers, he is a great mentor!! I am only 40 mins from Phil's place, so I drove over several early mornings to secure fresh pollen for my girls. I will be planting these seeds at the farm where we keep my daughters horse, and see what they put out......I am hoping for big and orange off both the 520 and the 644.5....

Cheers....

Bryan
