If sibbed, what was the father's weight?

Do not grow selfed seeds. I have done it before and there were some crazy mutations. Like flowers without pollen and peanut shaped pumpkins. LOL People warned me but I did not believe them. Sibbed is better.

One of my favorite seeds is a selfed seed. The 603.5 Muller. I've grown it several times.

I know there are a few good selfed seeds. But the chance a recessive gene will appear is greater.

Nic...When you grow up and have some pumpkin experience behind you will you be going back into the BP posts you made and correcting them? To declare "do not grow selfed seeds." and to blame peanut shaped pkns and flowers w/o pollen on selfing is irresponsible and erroneous.

How the seed that did that was selfed? Or is a selfed seed not a selfed seed anymore? LOL You take me too serious I am not a very serious person. Is 5 years of growing not experience? Thoughts just pop into my head then I post them I am not trying to make anyone mad.

Lipumpkin a few people on the Fertilizing and watering board got upset at my saying something similar....We must Remember that Nic is a kid..he's a good kid to and I see a future for him growing.

Nic, the same traits are seen in other non-selfed seeds all the time. I've grown some selfed seeds that have done well and some that haven't, just like all the non-selfed seeds I've grown, some good ones, some bad ones. But I agree with you that in most cases I'd prefer to plant a sibb seed over a self.

Selfed and Sibbed are used to create F-1, F-2, and on up so that genetic traits are locked in. The Johannsen Swedish squash record was from the offspring of our sibbed 823* which was from our selfed 834*.

Good point, most squash seeds have alot of selfing in their lineage.

My experience with selfed seeds is:1092 burke-runt plant very low to no pollen,977 anderson-the fruit matured in 18 days- monster plant,1402 boswoth-nice plant-nice pumpkin,1432 carlson-nice plant -nice pumpkin

Whether selfing or sibbing is the best thing to do really depends on the traits you want and the parents genetics. Nothing wrong with a selfed seed at all. If I had the choice I would prefer to grow a sibbed seed but not in all cases is it the best cross.

I'd grow a seed that was selfed for two generations.Anybody growing the 1725 harp should consider selfing it.If that plant has no genetic problems then selfing it again will be a good thing.

I believe I grew a world record squash off of a selfed seed back in 2007. Broke the old WR by more than 100 lbs. The old WR was grown off of an 848* and the new one off of an 848* x self (1055 Pitura*).

Nic, I am not a major authority, but, if you give advice in here, you shouldn't do it from an idea that just popped up in your head!!! Many people, experienced and new growers read this advice. The new people often don't have enough background to sort out the good from the bad, so why make it more difficult for them by posting information which might not really be the best advice. There has been a rash of major proportion of inexperienced people in here giving what wouldn't be considered very good advice lately.
