What seeds would you pick if you wanted to grow two plants that throw nice shiny bright orange fruit, and want to cross them and create a seed stock that will always throw orange?

(Impossible to say for certain, I think...)

That is, what seeds out there are MOST RELIABLE orange producers?

i like the 1290 poirier not the best shape but it throws nice orange look in my diary i grew a 421 in 09 on 200sf and a 317 this year on 175sf

I would cross 670 Daigle x 603 Muller and reverse. A 923 Gerhardt would suffice with the ever shrinking supply of 603's.

I have some 670 x 772 from 2008 that have not been tried. Not sure about the out come, but sure seemed like a nice cross at the time. LOL

I love these posts. 1662 stelts with 1290 poirer, maybe but I would sleep better with two proven orange parents. FYI, with reference to my previous post, I now have 300+ 670 Daigle x self seeds and three 923 Gerhardt seeds to test my theory. More is better:)

i crossed the 1290 poirier with the 993 vincent-mcgill this year the 1290 was a good looking pumpkin the 993 was not as orange as most but went 11% heavy

Wow nice to see talk about some of the orange seeds, the 923 did well this year but I think the offspring will do better. But in my personal opinion the 993 and 1059 Vincent-McGill will be tops. They look great.

I do have a 670 x 603.5 cross it is my 492.5 from 08 but there is better stuff out there! The MAGPG orange seed of the year will be the 921.5 Rosa (923 x SELF).

The MAGPG is graciously paying $150 to the club member who grows the largest Howard Dill winning pumpkin off this seed.

Yep, I love these posts, that's why I started it! lol... Keep 'em coming.

I would put that 993 at the top of my list, if I can get one.

For the Krueger crosses, what did the Janowiak do? I guess I can go searching on that one...

As far as I know the only seed that always....always.... produces competitive orange fruit (Howard Dill competitive) is the 603.5 Muller. All the others have made nice even striking color but still hit and miss.I admit I am not up on color seeds from last 2 years and although the 940Mombert has many bright orange ones I find the shapes to sometimes be a detriment to winning. Just my opinion for what its worth.

For the few times it has been grown my 1046 '06 has always thrown orange and shiny,,including my 1186 '07, all have gone even or over the charts as well a few Dill Award winners included.

Lots of them out there growing older.

My 988 grew a 1133 that won the Howard Dill award in 2009.
The 988 (670 x 1450) grows huge aggressive plants. I think this is a trait from the 1450..I'm growing a couple orange ones in 2011...so look out

my buddy crossed his 1293 Bhaskaran x 1544 revier. Both fruit where very orange. I think this could be a very big orange cross. 1544 produced 626 baker,

Always keep an eye out for crosses with the 705 Stelts in it, that, and many of Bill & Dawn Northrup's seeds (1101, etc.).

The 923 Gerhardt produced these 3 pumpkins the first year out plus one more orange one which I don't have a pic of, pretty consistant in my book:

These pumpkins were all grown within 30 miles of each other. Imagine if the rest of the world decides to give them a shot!

Yeah- I really like the 923. Tried to grow it this year but the plant didn't make it. It is a proven orange grower which throws really pretty pumpkins. Also, it has the size with two near 1000lbs. In my plans again next year.

I would love to check out the 923 Gerhardt those are some pretty pretty pumpkins. If anyone has an extra seed or 2 I'd be super excited to get em.

The MAGPG (Mid Atlantic Giant Pumpkin Growers) will be offering three amazing orange seeds to all of its members. The 923 Gerhardt 09 along with the Rosa 921.5 and the Gerhardt 921.5. Here is a link to the Howard Dill award winning 921.5 Rosa 5 days before being taken out of the patch. Really shows the great color. http://www.bigpumpkins.com/DiaryImages/FullSize/147214.jpg
One of these three seeds will bust the 1000 barrier next year, while retaining their great orange color and smooth texture!!! Bring on 2011, whoohooo!!!!!

Tim Tootle in Ohio grew a shiny bright orange pumpkin off of the 735 Veader-Hahn (2009). With the 730 Dill on the male side, it should continue to throw orange offspring.

For a look, please see Tim's diary at:
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=148525

In addition to ones mentioned above, another one that is a reliable orange producer is the 500 Northrup.

Chuck your 735 is one of the prettiest thick ribbed pumpkins I have seen. I am a major fan of the 730 Dill, second only to my personal favorite 670 Daigle. I grew a small, but very handsome pumpkin from a 670 and I'm hooked. I would like to cross it with a 730 Dill and 923 Gerhardt somewhere down the line.

The ones that jump out at me are the 218 Sandercock ,1059 Vincent McGill and 923 Gerhardt ( Jim you can pay my later for the endorsement). All of these have produced Howard Dill award winners.
