I will pollinate a plant thiz year with a single male off the main and then will plant that seed in at least 2-3 of my 4 patches the next year, all under the same conditions, same soil, same weather and same technique and let'z see the results...if you want me to do anything special, just let me know.

Almost all of my pollinations are with 1 male. I dont see a difference between multi and single pollinations

Biz, you guys are the veterans in this pumpkin deal. But, I have to tell ya, from working in the seed industry for 5 years, I can easily say that more pollination and more "visits" with pollen, the better the quality of fruit and seed that season. I have seen some huge problems with very hot summers in Northern Cal with affecting seed set and quality. Who knows what 2011 brings us. Just a thought.

Biz Thanks a bunch, But we're first going to do a couple tests, We're doing a 1385 Jutras plant and a 1725 Harp plant. We're going to see if the DNA is the same from a selfed to an original seed, (first and second generation) We're also going to check pollen from main vines to secondary's, and see if they have the same signatures from both plants. We're also looking to find the chromosome count. Once we do this, we'll then determine what other avenues should be pursued Eddy

wasn't quite done, and depending on costs, but we are looking at taking a female from one plant, and a male from another, get the 2 DNA signatures, and then the following year do a test on the off spring and see how much influence either the mothers or father are to new plant.
All these findings will be forwarded to The Wiz, and he will publish it in a news letter.

Barry Todd....he pollinated his Champ 1308 this year....several timeZ within the same day.....HiZ theory iZ this is how the BeeZ do it....why not us? He reopenZ the flower...several timeZ per day....and uses a fresh male once again, assuming off the same plant each time..........thinking that the ovules...open at different timeZ of the day....Interesting I think....Oh and by the way...he told me his champ pumpkin had over 500 seeds this year.....Hmmmmm... Food for thought BiZ.....but I look forward to your test.....indeed.... PS, dont steal my water.....WaterBoy.....

Im not sure how a lab will want to get DNA from a plant Eddy, unless its from the pollen in the males and females, right?,,
but can you get DNA off the pumpkin itself somehow?,, I really dont know how they would do that or even if it can be done , can it?
So just askin , even if it does make me look stupid (until you see me in person,or a picture of me ,,and say, man he really does look kinda stupid anyway,,lol)

I was thinking about this also, if enough people really want to know the answer to this question, maybe we should have a fund raiser auction to cover this cost, or each club that has a auction, have one seed set aside that they auction off and then donate that money to this cause, no sense in Eddy paying for it, even though he has money coming out of both ears and mouth when he talks, lol
Seriously, though something to think about, find a price on what something like this would cost, if it even can be done.
When you having the auction BIZ/WIZ,??,,lol just another small thing to pile on on your plate to do this year,,LOL!!
