Correct ! --- A selfed pollination would be using the male flower(s) from the same plant that the female flower is on -- A "sib" would be using male flower(s) from a different plant grown with the same seeds as the plant the female is on (ie. if you planted 2 seeds from the same pumpkin and use the male flowers from one of them for a female on the other)
"open" would be for when you are not sure what male was used - ie. you didn't pull the male flowers the night before and\or tie the female shut the night before opening so that it is possible a bee or insect got there before you did (even if the female is tied shut if you use males that have already opened in the field it should be considered open pollinated - because any bee that landed in that male flower might have left pollen from another male flower behind so you can not be sure where the pollen actually came from unless you have both the male and female flowers protected before use !

Thanks JDfan that explains what i needed to know. could you use hairnets to put over the flowers if the holes where small enough to keep insects from getting to the flower

Sure anything that keeps the insects from being able to get in there will work - for the males it is probably easiest to cut them off the plant the night before and bring inside and place in a glass of water near a window that will get early morning sunshine (just in case you sleep in a bit longer than you thought you would)

then remove the net from the female pollinate with the males and replace the net to keep it closed afterwards.
