To my pleasant surprise there seems to be an increasing appreciation for the beauty of an orange pumpkin. The 923 Gerheardt has received a lot of attention, I was fortunate enough to obtain more than a few in the off season. So what are the rest of you Howard Dill Award winner wannabes planning? Early February daydreaming leads me to any combination of:

923 x 710 Harnica ( 670 Daigle x 772 Poirier )
923 x 1159 Richards ( 1159 arguably the prettiest ever )
923 x 500 Northrup
923 x 1102 Pukos ( 1159 Richards x 998 Pukos )
923 x 785 Pukos ( 1102 Pukos x 1161 Rodonis )
Choosing is almost as fun as growing, I'd like to hear from other Oranger's.

I'm planning on crossing the 1610 Lieber into two others(I just need to determine the other two seeds). I might give the 1370 Rose a try.
Are any of you "orange nuts" considering the 977 Bosworth?

The 852 Myers is a killer cross. I wish you guys had sent some seeds in for the club distribution! I'm looking forward to seeing what that cross produces.

Ok...here's the cross I'm thinking if doing this year:
513.5 Vincent 10 (1059 V/M x 1161 Rodonis)
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=150506

cross

804 Vincent-McGill 07 est (670 Daigle x 1180 Daletas)
http://www.bigpumpkins.com/Diary/DiaryViewOne.asp?eid=73483

The 804 went down to a rodent damage in late August of 07. We felt it would have easily been over 1000 lbs. It has been grown very little, but the one that have been grown have been orange and on or over the chart. The pumpkin grown on the pollinating 1180 plant won the Howard dill award at Hugli's Blueberry ranch that year and was 13% heavy!

Hey John I thought it would be good to cross the 772 Poirier back in to your crosses or the 1290 Poirier.

I'm growing Vincent/McGill seeds again this year as not only did we grow a beauty 808 lb but it also happened to give us a new personal best.

The Vincent/McGill crosses are obviously very well planned and for our group, have been a pleasure to grow.

Thanks again John, already looking forward to your next years crosses!!

I am planning on several 218 Sandercocks. Those 4-500 pound bright orange ones seem to be the ones that are easy to sell. With the 218's weighing consistently heavy I think one will be given full attention to see how big it can go.

Pumpkin Bell,

Yes, the 772 would likely be an excellent choice to put back into the 1059 or 513. I guess, im always looking for a hybrid vigor cross of using reasonably unrelated genetics. My goal has always been a large, very symmetrical on or above chart very orange and preferably mottled pumpkin. The next generation cross has to have a very strong red/orange component to insure transmission of the trait.

I personally like anything with the 730 Dill in it. I grew a 735 Veader-Hahn last year and it was blazing orange. I crossed it with the 856 Harnica which was also a really nice orange. My 529 Tootle has 1191Northrup, 730Dill, 772Poirier, 670Daigle as it's grandparents. My plan for my 529 is to cross it with the 1610 this year and then put the 735Veader-Hahn back into it next year. I am hoping the 1610 will give my line more size while crossing the 735 back into it will keep it orange.

I am growing a 1059 Vincent McGill and my 1131 and one other to be decided on yet, either a 923,,1010,, or possibly a 1090 Northrup.. Not an easy decision........

i plan on planting the 1059 v/m, 513.5 v/m,1131 gansert,500 northrup and 1662.5 stelts, with 1046 stevens and 1004 mohr as backups.not sure on crosses yet , but i would like to pollenate either the 1059, or 513 with the 1662.5 stelts. that should out some real heavy genes and color with an already amazing seed.i am also very excited to see what the 1131 of norms produces, sure was a great looking pumpkin.good orange luck to you all in 2011.

2. 754 Schweigert 10 the reverse of the 1070. This pumpkin took the Howard Dill award @ Pumpkinville, NY 2010.

Well I'm pretty much committed at this point to cross the 921.5 Rosa x 923 Gerhardt, and the 923 Gerhardt x 1332 Wolf 10, and reverse. In terms of massive size plus great shape you can't beat the 1332. The color was a really nice medium orange and it went 13% over estimate.
