Anyone who cares has selected their orange seeds to plant but what are you dOing to increase the weights of Orange pumpkins? What is your game plan?

Well John Vincent has set the bar two years in a row, 993, 1059 and now his 513.5 Vincent 2010 = 1059 Vincent\McGill X 1161 Rodonis. This would be a good stand alone or pollinator, either way it's a good bet.

i hope for a 1059 x 1610 cross

I added the 1370 Rose to John Vincent's 993.2 in hopes that it would add some girth and size to the offspring while maintaining the brilliant orange. We will find out if it worked this year.

I am very excited to grow the 513 (1059 X 1161). I'm also growing a 1059 and might cross it back to help retain the orange, but also have the power of the 1161.

The 1662 Stelts might be worth a shot. It may take an extra generation to get it back to that nice shiny orange, but the potential is certainly there.

Gadzooks Gadberry's what do you think will be the outcome of 1610 x 834* squash? Deep down, I've had this feeling that the orange and the green are somehow related, maybe because the field pumpkins go from green to orange, not sure. Or maybe just because both traits seem to be somewhat recessive. Thoughts?

I firmly believe that the key is to search out a pumpkin that ended up with nice color and shape from a big seed that wasn't necessarily planted for that reason. Usually most of the talk is about color, but shape and texture are important too. Even a light orange pumpkin looks spectacular if it is also nice and round and not too cantalouped. AKA the 1332 Wolf 2010. I don't think color alone is going to be enough to get the job done at a hard core shoot-out like Doylestown this year.

Some big seeds that have shown the potential to throw nice lookers here and there are the 1161, 1385, 1544 and 1421.5. With the sheer # of 1421.5 to be planted in 2011 we are going to see some gems I guarantee it, the 1662 is in there somewhere. I think overall the 1421.5 has the best potential to produce that next 1610.

Some modern offspring from big fruit that already went really orange and/ or had great shape and skin are the 977 Bosworth, 1332 Wolf, 1610 Leiber. What other pumpkins caught "orange lightning" in a bottle?

I may be being a bit of a homer here but the 1471 Pierpont (1161 Rodonis X 1129 Pierpont) should get some consideration for big and orange. The 1471 was a HDA winner and the 1129 pollinator was a beautiful orange 1058 lb. pumpkin. The cross on the 1129 is 1225.4 Jutras X 998.6 Pukos. I have a couple nice pics on my camera of both the 1471 and 1058 , hopefully Ed won't mind me posting the pics to my diary and putting a link below. Also the 1058 was weighed at an early fair in Windsor,ME, pretty sure it was late August may have been early September. ile get those photos up

I'm planning on 1610 Lieber x self, 1290 Poirier x 1610, 1471 Pierpont x 1610, 1622 Young x 1610, and 1306 Mohr x 1610. Nothing like a theme, heh?

Yes we are after the deep color and big round shape both of these traits were dominate in the 1610 and 834*. Now that you bring it up I probably should use our 823* (834* x self) as it had the same round shape and black green color as the 834* and would be on the same inbred plane as the 1610 Lieber (1163 x self)... I am betting that the resulting off spring will be deep green and much bigger!

Perhaps the 1355 Kilburn is worth a look. A glance at the 1008 Ebbett grown from it is quite convincing. Pictures are on the AGGC site.

Perhaps Gad's is on to something. has anyone seen pictures of the 1495 Stelts 2010? It is an 1161 and was just about (but not quite)100% green! Perhaps the green gene is just under the surface of the 1161 and may be hiding in the 1610. There were a few seeds a few years back that grew either shiny orange or green.

the 1058 pierpont should be a good one,as the pollinator was the 1161 rodonis and grew the dark orange 1471 peirpont.

I'm a little surprised no one has mentioned 998 Pukos or 1231 Pukos. John's 1059- 993 V/M x 998 Pukos has produced some beauties and 919 Richards- 939 Richards x 1231 Pukos produced 1159 Richards and more beauties. 998 pretty hard to find, 1231 is a better bet.

I have been working on an orange and heavy cross for many years and I think im getting close.

2009 I had a cross (932 A Frantz) that was (on paper anyhow) 37.5% 1450, 25% 998, 18.75% 1097, 12.5% 1231 and 6.25% 1370. It was crossed with my 1176 Frantz (1370 Rose x 781 Frantz(1101 Northrup x 1125 Frantz). In my opinion, the 1101, 781 and 1125 were VERY beautiful pumpkins in both shape and color. I have been out of the pumpkin loop for a couple years but i challenge someone to find 3 better looking pumpkins!

Now that resulting cross is a seed i hope to plant this year..... just for fun / genetics as I am retired from competative pumpkin growing.

The genetic make up would potentially be similar to this...
1370 Rose 28.13%
781 Frantz 25%
1450 Wallace 18.75%
998 Pukos 12.5%
1097 Beachy 9.38%
1231 Pukos 6.25%

Not 100% decided on what im crossing INTO it this year. Debating sib, self, cross back to 07 cross ((1097x1370)x 1450). I want to bring back more 1450 I think. Love to hear opinions!

there is the link to 932 A Frantz. This is how decent the shape and color were BEFORE I added the nice orange to the mix. Im curious to see if my 2010 cross actually does produce big, orange and heavy. fingers crossed
