I'm having a change of heart and more than likely a Dill seed will be in the works for my attempt at big and orange. The Dill family has produced many, many potentially great orange crosses that have yet to be proven so why not, genetically speaking it's a good bet.
516 Dill- 1290 Poirier x 730 Dill
540 Dill - 1290 Poirier x 500 Northrup
570 Dill- 730 Dill x 500 Dill

and that's only 2010!

The 587 Dill could be a good one.
I grew the 587 Dill 08 (730 Dill x 998 Pukos)
The kin I grew on it was round and had a long stem.
Unfortunatly it never made it to maturity as I was using the plant for pollination purposes only.

That's good to know Ron. Diana sent me a few 587's last year. Another great example of orange potential.

There has been lots of talk about the 730 Dill (1016 x 810 Dill) and Diana sent me a 500 Dill which is the cross as the 730.

Were the 730 Dill and 500 Dill grown on the same plant?

Thanks/Glenn

I also grew the 587 D. Dill (2007) (730 Dill X 998 Pukos)
last season. The plant was very healthy and aggressive. I lost the plant shortly after fruit set due to an over-watering problem. Unable to report on offspring.

I am also a fan of the 730 Dill (2006) (1016 Daletas X 810 Dill) This was grown by Howard Dill himself. The 730 as a pollinator keeps the dark orange coming through in the offspring. I am aware the 730 was one of 2 plants on the same plant; however, I do not know the weight of the other pumpkin.

If anyone wants to consider growing an "orange" pumpkin, a great place to start is with Danny & Diana Dill. They usually make some very good orange crosses.

Perhaps someone knows what the other pumpkin was with Howard's 730 and can post the answer.

Thanks Chuck, I contacted Diana Dill and she sent me back a nice email with the answer. Yes, the 730 Dill and the 500 Dill were grown on the same plant and were the same cross of 1016 Daletas x 810 Dill.

Geez....now my seed choice gets even tougher!!

The more I think of it, the Dill family has been very, very good to me for years and now our club, so why not go through all their great seeds and pick one for big and orange. There sure are enough to choose from which makes it a difficult choice.
